National League (Cricket)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National League , which has been called the Pro40 League since 2006 , is the one-day cricket league of the English first-class county clubs and was launched in 1969. Until 1998 it was called the Sunday League because the games almost always took place on a Sunday.

From 2003 to 2005 the Scottish national team was under the name Scottish Saltires member of the league, from 2006 they took part in the restructured Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy .

Between 1988 and 1991, under the name Refuge Assurance Cup , an additional competition in the knockout system was played after the end of the season. The first four teams in the final table qualified for this.

The biggest changes came into force in the 1999 season, when the league was split into a 1st and 2nd division with 3 promoted and relegated teams and the over limit per innings was increased from 40 (only in 1993 there were 50 overs) to 45. Since the same year, the county clubs have been competing in this one-day league with Americanized suffixes.

The National League returned to the original 40-over format in the 2006 season, the third-last of the 1st and the third-placed in the 2nd division have since played a playoff for the last free place in the 1st division.

In July 2008, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced that the Pro40 League would be discontinued in 2010 and replaced by a second Twenty20 competition called the English Premier League . In August 2009, however, the English association made a U-turn. He announced that there would be another 40-over competition from 2010, but with three regional groups of 7 and a subsequent semi-finals. The meetings are to take place mainly on Sundays again. This competition is played under the name Clydesdale Bank 40 and replaces the National League and the Friends Provident Trophy.
