Benson & Hedges Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Benson & Hedges Cup was the third one-day cricket competition for the English first-class county clubs and was held from 1972 to 2002. Various amateur teams took part in it at different times, such as Ireland or the Combined Universities .

It consisted of preliminary round games at the beginning of the season and a subsequent knockout system from the quarterfinals. The final took place at Lord's Cricket Ground in the middle of the season. The Benson & Hedges Cup had a lower status than the older Gillette Cup .

It was the only trophy that always had the same sponsor until the tobacco advertising ban finally put an end to it. The competition was supposed to be abolished in 1999, but it lasted for a few years due to purely financial considerations of the county clubs.
