Vašek Chvátal (born July 20, 1946 in Prague ) is a Czech - Canadian mathematician who mainly works in linear and integer optimization as well as on graph theoretical problems. He has several important works to perfect graph , the Hamilton cycle problem and the Traveling Salesman Problem and a standard work on linear optimization written.

Education and career

Chvátal obtained his diploma in mathematics in 1968 and immediately left Czechoslovakia when Soviet troops invaded there and put an end to the Prague Spring . After a short stay in Austria , where he financed himself through casual work, he moved to the University of New Brunswick in eastern Canada and then to the University of Waterloo in Ontario , where he earned his doctorate. In the 1970s he worked at various universities, including the Université de Montréal and Stanford . During the following 15 years at Rutgers University he wrote numerous important articles and conducted research on the traveling salesman problem with David Applegate , Robert Bixby and William Cook . Until his retirement in January 2014, he was Professor of Combinatorial Optimization at Concordia University in Montréal.

The solution to the problem of the museum guards came from Chvátal .
