Chelsea Nikkel (born September 4, 1985 in Auckland ), known by her stage name Princess Chelsea , is a New Zealand singer and music producer . Musically, Princess Chelsea is assigned to indie pop , synth pop and baroque pop .

Career

Musically, Nikkel was shaped in the classical way, with piano and clarinet lessons. While still at school, she wrote the song Monkey Eats Bananas , which later became known primarily for a deliberately trashy music video. After finishing school, she founded the punk band Teen Wolf with two friends and became a live member of the tweepop band The Brunettes . In addition to classical composers such as Bach or Grieg , she counts contemporary interpreters such as Grimes , Boards of Canada or Air among her influences.

Nikkel was signed by the independent label Lil 'Chief Records , which released the debut album Lil' Golden Book by the nineteen-year-olds in 2011 . The Guardian saw “magical-musical moral stories” as well as “poisonous fairy tales” and “lullabies for the Addams Family” in this debut. Musically, the album is described as a “soundtrack to an old Disney film, mixed with Kraftwerk , with Enya as the singer, in a 1960s production of Les Mis in space” and as a “weird version of the young France Gall ”. All in all, it would be a “great album”, especially if you have a sense for the “adorable strange”. The New Zealand Herald praised the "angelic song with a bitter joke".

Nikkel achieved notoriety in 2012 for the music video of her song The Cigarette Duet , in which she and Jonathan Bree argued about smoking. The follow-up album The Great Cybernetic Depression was released in 2015 . Thematically, the album deals primarily with social and technological criticism. In 2015 Robin Schulz released a remix of her song World Turns Gray on his album Sugar . After the cover album Aftertouch , the fourth album by Princess Chelsea was released in 2018 with The Loneliest Girl . The Musikexpress sees it as "elegiac, echoing, sugary synth-pop", but also criticizes the fact that it would have been further in this "irony game" and that one would quickly have had enough of the "winking child schema show".
