Grimes (born March 17, 1988 in Vancouver , British Columbia as Claire Boucher , since 2018 " c Boucher") is a Canadian singer and music producer .

Life

Until 2011: early years and first publications

Boucher was born and raised in Vancouver , an Anglophone Canadian . She is one of several children of a French-Italian mother and a father of partly Ukrainian and partly Métis ancestry. Her parents raised her conservatively and sent her to a Catholic school.

In 2006, she moved to Montreal to there at the McGill University first Russian literature, later neuroscience to study. During this time she began to write, produce and record her own songs for the first time. According to her own statement, she did not learn an instrument as a child and did not make music until she was in her early 20s. During her studies she began to teach herself music production under the influence of her friends . At the beginning of 2011, she dropped out without a degree and began performing and recording as a musician under the name Grimes . For her stage name she was inspired by the name of the music genre Grime , with which her musical style has little in common.

Her debut album Geidi Primes was released on cassette in Canada in early 2010 and on CD and LP in the USA and Great Britain by the British music label No Pain. The name refers to the fictional planet Giedi Prime from a novel by Frank Herbert . The album contains eleven tracks that are produced in the style of alternative pop . After its release, it received mostly positive reviews from fans and music critics.

In September of the same year their second studio album was released Halfaxa , which includes 16 titles and genres Witch House , dream pop , darkwave , synth pop and ambient recalls. In 2011 Grimes played in the opening act for Lykke Li on their North American tour. In the same year, their EP Darkbloom was released in the form of a two-part album in collaboration with d'Eon.

2012: International breakthrough with Visions

She has been under contract with the independent British record label 4AD since 2012 . There the international debut album Visions was released in 2012 , which made it into the US and British charts, among others. The titles Oblivion and Genesis were able to place in the US and the Mexican charts. The NME magazine chose Grimes No. 1 on the "20 Most Exciting New Bands Of 2012".

Since 2015: Change of style with Art Angels and relationship with Elon Musk

Her fifth album Art Angels was released in 2015 and contained more pop songs compared to her previous albums . It was at the top of many of the year's best lists. In the same year, Grimes appeared as a support act for Lana Del Rey as part of their Endless Summer Tour .

It has been known since May 2018 that Grimes has a relationship with automotive and aerospace entrepreneur Elon Musk . According to Musk, they met on Twitter by creating a pun that combined the art style Rococo with the AI thought experiment Roko's Basilisk , but through an Internet search they had to find out that Grimes had already made the same joke in the past. On January 8, 2020, Grimes announced that it was pregnant. On May 5, 2020 it was announced that their child had been born.

Her album Miss Anthropocene was released on February 21, 2020 .

style

Grimes' electronic music style is influenced by pop music , noise rock , dark wave , R&B , Japanese and medieval music.

Grimes not only produces each of her songs himself, but has also illustrated all of her album covers to date and produced a large part or all of her music videos himself.

Grimes is known to lisp . In a 2016 interview, she said she liked her lisp and wasn't considering undergoing speech therapy .
