Bring Me the Horizon (BMTH) is a British band from Sheffield , Yorkshire . The band was formed in 2004 by members of various other bands in their area.

history

2004–2007: the beginnings and Count Your Blessings

Bring Me the Horizon was formed in 2004 through the merger of several bands from the Sheffield region.

The band is currently signed to Visible Noise , previously to Thirty Days of Night Records. BMTH was therefore the first band to be signed to Thirty Days of Night Records. The band is also under contract with Epitaph Records , which distributes the releases in the United States. In Australia, the band's recordings are released by Shock Records .

The band released their first EP This Is What the Edge of Your Seat Was Made For in October 2004. Two years later, the EP debuted at number 41 in the UK charts. Almost a year after it was released in the UK, it was also launched in the US.

In October 2006 the band released their debut album Count Your Blessings . Just a month later, the album landed at number 93 on the British charts. In August 2007 the publication followed in the USA.

In March 2007, singer Oliver Sykes attracted more attention: he is said to have urinated on a female fan after a concert in Nottingham after Sykes had rejected him. In April of the same year, hearings began in Nottingham Magistrates Court. The hearings continued several times before the charges against Sykes were dropped in September on the basis of a lack of evidence.

The band toured with Lostprophets , The Blackout , Killswitch Engage and The Haunted at the time . Between March and April 2007, the band headlined toured with I Killed the Prom Queen by Britain . In addition, the band toured North America , where they were accompanied by Travis McCoy ( Gym Class Heroes ) as a guest singer. In November 2007 the band played 3 concerts in Australia . The band was in the line-up of the download festival , but the scheduled performance did not materialize because the band's tour bus had a flat tire.

2008–2009: Suicide Season and line-up change

In early 2008 the band began writing material for their new album. Between April and May of the same year the band went to Sweden , where the band recorded their album together with Fredrik Nordström (he already worked with At the Gates , Arch Enemy , I Killed the Prom Queen and Dimmu Borgir ). Between May and June the band toured with I Killed the Prom Queen on their farewell tour through Australia.

The second studio album, Suicide Season , was finally released in late September 2008. In contrast to Count Your Blessings , which is an almost pure deathcore album, Suicide Season has significantly more elements of metalcore .

That same year, the band was the first time in the US as a headliner on the road and played on the Vans Warped Tour 2008. A year later, Bring Me the Horizon played together with Mindless Self Indulgence , In Case Of Fire , Black Tide and Dir en gray on the Relentless UK Tour from Kerrang! . The band also played with Thursday , Cancer Bats , Four Year Strong and Pierce the Veil on the Taste of Chaos tour in North America that same year .

In March 2009 Curtis Ward left the band. One report stated that it was no longer possible to overlook the fact that Ward no longer enjoyed the band's music and that this fact had an impact on his engagement. Curtis came to London on December 3, 2014 for a guest appearance with the band to play Pray for Plagues from the album Count Your Blessings with the band . In May 2009, Jona Weinhofen was introduced as the new guitarist who was initially intended to replace Ward. He has already played for I Killed the Prom Queen and Bleeding Through . Weinhofen became a permanent member of the band in July.

On August 27, 2009, the band announced that they would like to release a "remix version" of their second studio album, Suicide Season . According to singer Sykes, this idea came about when the band suggested a friend to remix one of their songs. During production, the band was supported by producers and musicians from various bands, including Ben Weinman ( The Dillinger Escape Plan ), Sonny Moore , L'Amour La Morgue ( Lostprophets ), Utah Saints and Shawn Crahan ( Slipknot ). In an interview, Sykes said that every song on the remix album is very different from the original songs and that there are no similarities in the melody. The album was released on November 2, 2009 under the name Suicide Season: Cut Up! released.

2009 to 2011: There Is a Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is a Heaven, Let's Keep It a Secret

In an interview with Kerrang! Magazine, the band announced that they would be writing new material for the follow-up to the album Suicide Season during the summer of 2009 . The plan was to go into the studio with Fredrik Nordström in March 2010 and finish the album by the summer. The work progressed slowly, the band was only able to move into the studio in mid-April, so that the actual release date, which was set for the summer, was finally postponed to October 8th. The album is called There Is a Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is a Heaven, Let's Keep It a Secret and was released in Germany in October 2011. It reached number 17 on the Billboard Top 200 , number 13 on the UK charts and number 1 on the Australian album charts. Even though the album was number one in the Australian charts, the album was only sold 3,600 times, the lowest value on the ARIA charts of all time. The band received a Kerrang for the album in 2011 ! Award for the best album .

In September and October 2010, the group played a headline tour of the UK, with the band performing in smaller clubs. This concert tour was accompanied by the Cancer Bats . A small arena tour followed in December as the main support for Bullet for My Valentine . In April 2011 the group started on a European tour, which started in the UK. The group played with Parkway Drive and Architects as main supporting acts, as well as The Devil Wears Prada and the dubstep group Tek-one in the general supporting act. In April 2011, drummer Matt Nicholls broke his arm as a result of a football game with fellow musicians on the tour. He was replaced by Architects drummer Dan Searle, which, however, had to shorten the set list considerably. The tour was extended by a further section, which took place between August 13th and October 4th 2011 in the United States and was accompanied by Deez Nuts . Another European tour followed in December 2011, this time as the main support act for Machine Head . Sykes said this would be the last concert tour before work on the fourth studio album. A collaboration EP with DJ Draper titled The Chillout Sessions has also been announced for New Years, but the release has been postponed due to several uncertain factors.

2012–2014: Sempiternal

For 2012 the band members decided to work on their fourth studio album, Sempiternal , instead of media activities and appearances . The recordings took place in the Angelic Studio in Banbury (Oxfordshire). On November 3rd, 2012 the band invited some fans and members of the Drop Dead Clothing team to rehearse the choral background vocals for some recordings of the album. Two days later the band announced that they had made an audio sample of the later released album track Shadow Moses available on the website sempiternal.info . It was first published on January 4, 2013 in an American radio show.

Oliver Sykes at the Southside Festival 2014

At the beginning of January 2013, Jordan Fish was also introduced as a new band member, who had previously helped with the recording of the new album. In mid-January 2013 the band announced that Jona Weinhofen is no longer a member of the band. Back in 2011, a post appeared on the guitarist's tumblr page by announcing his departure from the band. However, this turned out to be wrong. Founding member Oliver Sykes stated that the official reason was that Weinhofen had to leave the band, as his critical statements would damage the reputation of the entire band, as these would be transferred to the band. Weinhofen did not respond to the request to withdraw from public statements in the future. Afterwards, rumors circulated about whether Jordan Fish, who had happened at the beginning of the year, would take Jona Weinhofen's place. However, this was denied by Fish himself.

Sempiternal was released in Germany on March 29, 2013 by Sony Music Entertainment . The album was able to place in several official charts, including in Germany , Switzerland , Austria , the United States and the United Kingdom . In Australia it even made it to number 1 in the album charts . The album was named Album of the Year at the Alternative Press Music Awards . In the UK the album was awarded silver for 60,000 records soldand gold for 35,000 unitssoldin Australia.

In May 2013, Bring Me the Horizon came to Germany for two club concerts . They first appeared in Hamburg and a few days later in Berlin . The band also performed at Rock am Ring and Rock im Park . In June 2013 the band announced that they would go on a European tour in November and December 2013. The band played in a total of eight German cities. At the beginning of February 2014 the group started a multi-week concert tour through North America with Of Mice & Men , which ended on March 28, 2014 with a performance at SOMA in San Diego . In the summer the band played at the Vainstream in Münster, the With Full Force and the Wacken Open Air . Between September and October 2014 the group toured North America with A Day to Remember , Motionless in White and Chiodos as part of the Parks & Devastation Tour . On December 5th, 2014 the band will play with Young Guns , Issues and Sleepwave at Wembley Arena in London .

On October 13, 2014, the first new song, Drown , was announced for December 7, 2014. The music video was released on October 21, 2014. The group also announced their new album for 2015 on their homepage. Just a week after the release of the music video for the single Drown , Don't Look Down, the group's second new song, was released. On August 24, 2015, True Friends was the third single for their fifth album, which is called That's the Spirit and was released on September 11, 2015. The other two singles are called Throne and Happy Song . It is the group's first album to be released on Columbia Records , a major label .

In late August 2015 the group performed on the main stage of the Reading and Leeds Festival . Between October 1 and October 25, 2015, the group toured the United States and Canada . The tour ended with an appearance at the Knotfest in San Bernardino , California . The concert tour was accompanied by Issues and PVRIS . On November 2nd, 2015, the band embarked on an extensive European tour, which ended after 22 concerts on December 9th, 2015 in Moscow , Russia . The group has performed in Germany , Austria , Finland , Sweden , Denmark , Belgium , the Netherlands , the United Kingdom , Ukraine and Belarus . The concert tour was accompanied by Neck Deep , Beartooth and PVRIS . The band was first seen on German television on November 23, 2015. The band was part of the show Circus HalliGalli on Pro Sieben , where they performed their song Throne exclusively.

On April 22nd, 2016 the band played a concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London, which was accompanied by an orchestra . The total proceeds were donated to a charitable project.

Since 2018: Amo

The single MANTRA was released on August 21, 2018 . One day later, on August 22nd, 2018, the band announced their next album amo , which was released on January 25th, 2019. The second single, Wonderful Life , was released on October 21, 2018 . At the end of December 2018, teasers appeared for a new song, which should be released on January 3, 2019. The song is called medicine and is the third single from the new album.

Music genre

On their debut album Count Your Blessings they mixed metalcore with clear Death Metal borrowings. This crossover is also called deathcore.

On Suicide Season , their second album, which was released in September 2008, they devoted themselves more to metalcore. Vocally there are still growls and screams to be heard, but also in contrast to the previous album more screams, as is usual in Metalcore. On Sempiternal, their fourth album, a clear step towards metalcore can be seen.

Singer Oli Sykes commented on the music style of the album as follows: “I would describe it as more rock than metal. It's heavy though ”. ("I would describe it as more rock than metal, but it's still heavy.") He also described the album as a clear departure from the debut album Count Your Blessings . According to Sykes, the main reason for the change in style is that so many bands are currently active in the deathcore genre . The style of Suicide Season was largely retained on the third LP.

Controversy

After singer Sykes already sat in court, the band attracted further attention after a concert in Karlsruhe . During a daytime concert with the band Architects , a video was filmed showing several fights between Sykes and Architects singer Sam Carter. Carter is said to have hit Sykes several times. The video was uploaded to the YouTube video platform . Shortly after the release, Sam Carter is said to have received hundreds of hate mail from angry BMTH and Sykes fans who believed the video and the violence depicted to be real.

In the Kerrang! -Magazine made it clear to Carter that the fight scenes were not real and that the noises from blows were digitally inserted. Sykes confirmed Carter's account. He said that daytime events can get boring quickly and that this video was shot to avoid boredom. This clarification normalized the relationship between BMTH fans and architects.

In October 2011, 20-year-old David Russell from England posed as Sykes on the social network Facebook and lured a female fan of the band from the USA to Sheffield . On arrival in England, he made his 19-year-old victim blindfold. In a wooded area he tried to kill the girl, which did not succeed. Russell was sentenced to 17 years in prison by a Nottingham court for kidnapping and attempted murder.

Veganism

Oliver Sykes is vegan and also sells T-shirts with the imprint “Meat sucks” through his fashion label “Drop Dead”, which can also be seen on band photos. He also works with Matt Nicholls frequently with PETA . Among other things, they took part in PETA campaigns against KFC . Jona Weinhofen is also a vegan . In an interview with the band it became known that the other band members are no longer vegetarians.

Stand within the metal scene

The group has a difficult time in the metal scene . At a concert by the band in Salt Lake City ( Utah , USA ) the violence against them degenerated. Rioters stormed the stage after throwing water bottles at the group's front man. Sykes poured the bottles on the "bottle throwers", whereupon they attacked the band. Some started a fight with other viewers. The band had to flee from the rioters. There are videos of the scene on the YouTube video platform .
