biography

When Sykes was five years old, his family emigrated to Australia . As a teenager, he attended Stocksbridge High School , where he was a grade under Alex Turner and Matt Helders of the Arctic Monkeys . After leaving school, he released several compilation CDs under the name QuakeBeat . At the age of 16 he founded the ambient electronic project Olisarus together with the later Rolo Tomassi keyboarder James Spence . He later founded the death metal band Purple Curto with his friend Neil Whiteley . On his 18th birthday, the band played a few songs that were sung by Neil Whiteley's girlfriend. In 2004 he founded the metalcore / deathcore band Bring Me the Horizon with Matt Nicholls , which is very successful. With the band he won the Kerrang Award for Best Newcomer Band in the UK . Shortly after founding this band, he founded the rap project Womb 2 da Tomb with his brother Tom and Matt Nicholls , which has so far released an album. Furthermore, he announced on his Myspace presence that he is planning another music project. This should be realized shortly after the release of the second album by the band Bring Me the Horizon, but their fifth album has already been released.

He attended college, which he left out of frustration at the age of 16. There he studied graphic design and media. In 2014, Sykes reported seeking addiction therapy after being dependent on ketamine for some time . As part of therapy, Sykes used a new form of medication to more effectively treat his attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder , which was diagnosed in early childhood.

On July 12, 2015, he married his long-time girlfriend and fiancé Hannah Pixie Snowdon in Italy . In June 2016, Sykes announced the separation on the Instagram platform . In October 2017, he and his bandmate Jordan Fish climbed Kilimanjaro in Kenya together for a good cause. In July 2018, Sykes married the Brazilian model Alissa Salls.

Sykes is an avowed atheist and stated that he does not believe in a god. He was asked to believe in God when he felt bad. He also said that he couldn't understand why he needed a god or something that didn't exist. He gives to understand that he sees neither himself nor the others in the right. If this belief did not affect other people, he would have no problem with it. However, Sykes sees other people compulsively influenced by a belief in God and describes religion as the greatest cause of the tumult in the world.

Nottingham incident

During the band's tour of England, an investigation was initiated against Sykes for allegedly urinating on a female fan at a concert by the band in Nottingham after Sykes had rejected him. Sykes was arrested by the police. The online music magazine Drowned In Sound reported that the band from the operator of Rock City are never allowed to play in Rock City again. The label Visible Noise denied the magazine's statement and the band played another concert in Rock City in December 2007.

On April 13, Sykes appeared before Nottingham Magistrates Court over the incident, where he stated that he was not guilty of the matter. The case was negotiated in early May. The case was reopened on May 3, but Sykes continued to insist on his innocence. Another trial took place in September. The charges against Sykes were eventually dropped due to a lack of evidence.

He explicitly refers to this incident in the song "No Need for Introductions I've Read About Girls Like You on the Back of Toilet Doors", published on the album Suicide Season.

The Architects incident

During another tour, a video was made showing Sykes in multiple fights with architects front man Sam Carter. According to this, Sykes is said to have been beaten up by Carter during a concert by both bands that took place in Karlsruhe . The video was uploaded to the YouTube video platform and was clicked on by thousands of people. Carter received hundreds of hate mails from BMTH fans because of these scenes . Sykes said in an interview that day concerts can get boring pretty quickly and that these fight scenes were played to escape boredom. After Sykes made his statement on the incident, the relationship between the fans and the band Architects normalized.

The Facebook incident

In October 2011, 20-year-old David Russell from England posed as Sykes on the social network Facebook and lured a female fan of the band from the USA to Sheffield . When he arrived in England, he made his 19-year-old victim blindfold. In a wooded area he tried to kill the girl, which did not succeed. Russell was sentenced to 17 years in prison by a Nottingham court for kidnapping and attempted murder.

Drug problem

On July 21, 2014, it was announced that Sykes had been struggling with a drug problem for a long time. Sykes said in his address to the Alternative Press Music Awards that he was addicted to ketamine . Before he worked with the band on their last album, Sempiternal , which won an award at the awards ceremony, he spent a month in a rehab clinic.

"I want to say something that I never thought I'd actually talk about. Before we wrote 'Sempiternal' I was af – king drug addict. I was addicted to a drug called ketamine; I was on it for years and I was f – ked off my head. My band wanted to kill me, my parents wanted to kill me and my f – king brother wanted to kill me; everyone wanted to kill me, everybody wanted to f – king take me to hell, but they didn't. They stood by me, they supported me through all of that s – t and we wrote 'Sempiternal' because of it. No one f – king knows, no one f – king knows this, but I went to rehab for a month, and through that time, as well as my f – king band and my family, you guys - you had no f – king idea that I was in rehab - but you were sending me letters, you were sending me texts, you were sending me f – king emails. And when I got out of that rehab I didn't want to f – king scream anymore, I wanted to sing it from the f – king rooftops. And it's all thanks to you, so thank you very much. "

Drop Dead Clothing

Drop Dead Clothing is a trendy fashion label founded by Sykes. It was launched shortly after the band Bring Me the Horizon was formed. With the success of the band, the label's response in the scene also grew. Originally, the often macabre motifs were designed personally by Sykes, but in the course of increasing demand and the associated expansion of the range, the company switched to employing various independent, freelance artists with the design of the motifs. The label's trademark, an undead cat, was designed by the scene artist Michael Shantz, who is also responsible for the merchandise of several other bands in the metal / hardcore genre.

After the success of BMTH's debut album Count Your Blessings, awareness of the label continued to grow, so that Sykes hired his younger brother, Tom, and his mother Carol. Drop Dead has been selling its items worldwide since 2008 and the label has also been able to attract well-known buyers with Lostprophets , TaGa , Gallows and Kano .

On May 1st, 2010 the first Drop Dead Shop opened in London . The first 100 visitors received a free t-shirt, personally presented by Sykes. Since Sykes is vegan and is involved in the PETA campaign against the American fast-food company Kentucky Fried Chicken , he also sells T-shirts with "Meat sucks" printed on them at Drop Dead.
