Alternative Press Music Awards
The Alternative Press Music Award (short The AP Music Awards or APMAS ) is an American music award, which was presented for the first time in 2014 by the American music magazine Alternative Press .
history
On April 24, 2014, the American music magazine Alternative Press , which specializes primarily in punk , hardcore and their subgenres, announced the first-time presentation of the Alternative Press Music Awards on July 21, 2014.
Alternative Press editor Mike Shea commented on the first-time award ceremony as follows:
"For nearly 30 years, Alternative Press has been the leading voice in cutting-edge music and lifestyle. Now we can finally have a night of our own. "
The award show was held at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum near Lake Erie in Cleveland , Ohio . Readers vote for the winner in twelve categories in an online voting. The first award ceremony was broadcast on AXS TV , which has a reach of approximately 42 million households in the United States.
In 2015, a new category was published with the Best Music Video . In 2015, the awards ceremony moved: the APMAS were held in the Quicken Loans Arena , home of the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball club . The Time Magazine called the Alternative Press Music Awards as " Grammy of the alternative music scene."
Another move was necessary for the award ceremony in 2016, as the event at the same time as the Republican National Convention, which was also held in Cleveland , made it impossible to use the Quicken Loans Arena again. So the decision was made for the first time outside of Cleveland, in the Value City Arena in Columbus .
In 2017 the event returned to Cleveland. Andy Biersack was confirmed as moderator by the Black Veil Brides after Alex Gaskarth and Jack Barakat from All Time Low had played the role in the previous two years . In the spring of the following year it was announced that the award ceremony would take place for the first time in autumn in order to avoid an overlap with the Warped Tour , which was held as a festival tour for the last time this summer. However, it was announced at the beginning of November that no award show would be held in 2018 and that the future time of a renewed event is uncertain.

The "Skully"
The trophy for the winner of each category is called the “Skully”. It resembles a skull and has the shape of a standing microphone . The idea for the appearance of the trophy came up at an editorial meeting in October 2013. The shape is based on an item by editor-in-chief Mike Shea, which was suggested by Josh Bernstein as a template. The Skully was designed and conceived by Jason Goad and Rich Sandomeno. The latter was also responsible for designing the prizes at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards .
There were several templates for the trophy, including one in the shape of a Valkyrie . Although this design met with approval, it was discarded because it resembled an Emmy trophy. Even if the motif was not selected, it was used on backdrops and advertising posters for the first event of the award ceremony.
The Skully is 9 inches tall , made from nickel , urethane , and steel, and is chrome-plated .
