history

Foundation and first publications

State Champs was founded in the spring of 2010 in Albany , New York . The founders of the band were singer Derek DiScanio and lead guitarist Tyler Szalkowski. With William Goodermote, Dave Fogarty and Matt Croteau, a bassist , a drummer and a second guitarist joined DiScanio and Szalkowski very quickly , so that the release of a first EP became possible in August of the founding year.

Half a year later, in January 2011, the second EP was released under the title Apparently, I'm Nothing , which included both new pieces and the full debut EP. In July of the same year the band completed their first small concert tour. Rhythm guitarist Fogarty got out of State Champs in late 2011 and was replaced by Tony Diaz the following year.

Signed with Pure Noise Records and The Finer Things

With the release of a demo version of the song Critical in April 2012, the musicians were able to attract the interest of a record label, management and concert agency. State Champs signed a contract with the independent record company Pure Noise Records in the middle of the same month , through which the EP Overslept was released in September .

State Champs spent the summer on tour with the groups Forever Came Calling and With the Punches . In September and October the group played with their label colleagues Handguns . A month later a concert tour with the emo band Citizen followed , before the band went on tour in December with Hit the Lights and A Loss for Words . In the same year Matt Croteau left the group and was replaced by Evan Ambrosio as drummer .

In March and April 2013, the group should be part of the opening act for Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! play on their Pardon My French Tour , but the French band decided to support A Day to Remember on their Right Back at It Again Tour instead, so State Champs did the Pardon My Angst Tour with handguns instead . In May, the musicians announced that they had finished work on their debut album. Sam Pudra and former New Found Glory guitarist Steve Klein worked as producers on the recordings. The Finer Things , the name of the debut album, was released on October 8, 2013 and sold around 3,100 times in the first week of sales, so that the album entered the official album charts of the United States at number 132 and stayed in the best list for a week could.

In order to be able to promote the album, the band went on a North American tour with Bayside and Motion City Soundtrack in the fall of 2013 . In 2013, William Goodermote's departure from the band was announced. The former was as a new rhythm guitarist Good Luck Varsity - bassist Ryan Scott Graham are obtained. The musicians spent much of the following year on tour in order to continue promoting The Finer Things . In March the band played their first full concert tour through the United States as the opening act for We Are the In Crowd , William Beckett and Set It Off! . Afterwards, the band played for the first time on a European tour in the opening act of The Wonder Years and A Loss for Words . In the summer of the same year State Champs played on the Warped Tour , where they mainly played on the Kevin Says Stage and occasionally also appeared on one of the main stages. While the musicians were completing the Warped Tour, their participation in the Pure Noise Records Tour was announced. In October 2014, the band released an EP called The Acoustic Things , which contains acoustic versions of five tracks from the debut album and two new pieces.

Around the World and Back

In the spring of 2015, State Champs supported All Time Low on their Future Hearts Tour , and in June they supported 5 Seconds of Summer in Australia and New Zealand . In July of the same year, the second album, Around the World and Back , was announced for October 16, 2015 and finally released. The album was able to confirm and improve the chart success of its predecessor: It rose to number 30 in the United States and for the first time to number 78 in the British album charts .

In February 2016, State Champs completed a co-headlining world tour with Neck Deep , which supported Creeper and Light Years in Europe. In the United States and Canada , the tour was supported by Knuckle Puck and Like Pacific . The tour also went through Australia and Japan . In May of the same year, shortly after the co-headlining world tour, the band played in the opening act for Parkway Drive and A Day to Remember . The group spent the summer again on the entire Warped Tour , where the musicians could be seen for the first time on one of the two main stages. In July of the same year, the band was a participant in the Alternative Press Music Awards , where the group was nominated in three categories and was named " Best Starter ". After the Warped Tour ended , State Champs played as the opening act on the main stage at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in the UK.

In March 2017 it was announced that the second album Around the World and Back would be reissued with additional material and a DVD and released on May 5, 2017.

style

State Champs play pop punk influenced by groups like The Story So Far , New Found Glory and Fall Out Boy . On the album Around the World and Back , released in 2015, the musicians work more with the elements of pop music , so that a comparison with the Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer is possible. The music was initially described as Easycore , adding to the pop-punk sound with the use of breakdowns and the occasional screaming song, but these have now completely disappeared. A comparison with All Time Low was also used.
