Citizen is a punk / post-hardcore band from Toledo , Ohio , formed in 2009 .
history
Citizen was founded in 2009 in Toledo , Ohio , USA . The group consists of singer Mat Kerekes, the two guitarists Nick Hamm and Ryland Oehlers, as well as bassist Eric Hamm and drummer Jake Duhaime. At the time the band was formed, the musicians were still high school students .
The quintet released their debut EP Young States in 2012. This was followed by a record deal with Run for Cover Records , which resulted in the debut album Youth being released. It rose to number 171 in the US album charts on June 19, 2013 . This was followed by an appearance on the entire Warped Tour . Tours with The Story So Far , Tonight Alive , Man Overboard , Defeater , Modern Baseball , Real Friends and The Wonder Years followed . In September and October 2014 the group played their first headlining tour. As opening acts were You Blew It! , True Love and Hostage Calm confirmed.
style
The music is described as a mix of punk emo , indie rock and even metal . According to Allmusic , Citizen is a post-hardcore band. According to the German Ox-Fanzine , the group plays a kind of neo- grunge , similar to Daylight , Title Fight and Balance & Composure .
The lyrics on her debut album Youth are about personal experiences, frustration and the fear of growing up.

Side projects
Singer Mat Kerekes has since started a solo career and released his first EP on June 12, 2014 via Synergy Records . He is also the founder of the hardcore band Power Wrench . With this band he released a split EP with the band Spitback.
