Defeater is an American melodic hardcore band from Boston that was formed in 2004. Together with La Dispute , Make Do and Mend , Pianos Become the Teeth and Touché Amoré, she forms the post-hardcore movement The Wave .

history

Defeater has released four albums so far, Travels (2009), Empty Days & Sleepless Nights (2011), Letters Home (2013) and Abandoned (2015), two EPs and one single, so far all releases have been released on the Bridge 9 Records label . The only exception is the album Travels , for which Topshelf Records initially held the rights. In January 2015 the band signed with Epitaph Records . Just two months after the album "Abandoned" was released there in August 2015, Defeater announced on Facebook on October 20, 2015 that guitarist and producer Jay Maas and the band would go their separate ways due to "personal and creative differences".

Defeater has played with La Dispute , Comeback Kid and Bane , among others , but also at festivals such as the Hevy Music Festival.

style

Defeater is a hardcore band that likes to allow themselves "creative freedom" when composing. Guitarist Jay Maas said, "There's a popular belief in this genre that if you don't do exactly what hardcore bands have been doing for the past 25 years, you're no good." On their second studio album, Empty Days & Sleepless Nights there are also four acoustic pieces at the end.

Defeater tells a story over several concept albums . It describes the needs and international conflicts in the post-war period from the perspective of a working class family from New Jersey . Maas justified the band's interest in this historical epoch by saying that it was a time of great prosperity in America, but that there was still a lot of racism , sexism and homophobia . Defeater writes about prejudice and war and murder and how it affects real people. All of these things would definitely be in stark contrast to the rosy Norman Rockwell vision of the time.
