history

2007–2010: Founding and Something for Nothing

The group was founded in 2007 by Paul Wilson, Bertrand Poncet and Jonathan Donnaes in Paris . Wilson started the group because he wanted to experiment with a sound that consists of pop-punk , hardcore and heavy metal . Shortly after it was founded, two more musicians joined the group, but left the group quickly, so that Bertrand's brother Éric (electric guitar) and his friend Mathias Rigal ( electric bass ) joined the group. Neither of them had played an instrument at the time.

The band name comes from the 1985 adventure film The Goonies in which the protagonists Chunk and Sloth are among the main characters. As a further reason, Poncet said that the film was a "nice childhood memory" and that the name best "reflects" the musicians within the band. Shortly after the founding, the band recorded their first EP, which includes the song MILF , which was later re-recorded on the debut album.

The band itself stated that it was very difficult to get your own fan base in France, as there was almost no rock music scene in this country. Instead, the group managed to gain a group of fans in other European countries and in North America . The group released their first single In Friends We Trust on September 2, 2010 for the debut album, which was released on November 1, 2010 and called Something for Nothing .

2010-2014: Pardon My French

After the group was given a worldwide record deal by Fearless Records , a new edition of their debut album Something for Nothing was released on July 19, 2011. The new edition has a different cover design and a different tracklist: This is how the pieces became MILF and Alex Kidd in a Miracle World replaced with Make Them Believe . Make Them Believe was originally a bonus track on the Japanese version of the first edition of the album. A music video was shot for Captain Blood for the re-release of the album .

In October 2011, the group took part in the Across the Nation Tour , where Miss May I were headlining. As part of this concert tour, the band played for the first time in the United Kingdom . In December, the group played a full tour of the United States on the Fearless Friends Tour with Blessthefall , The Word Alive , Motionless in White and Tonight Alive . On 21 November 2011, the compilation was released Punk Goes Pop 4 of the Punk Goes ... series, where the group with a cover of Ke $ ha single We R Who We R is represented.

At the end of January and February 2012, the group toured supporting Attack Attack! again through the states. In March and April a concert tour with the deathcore band Chelsea Grin followed . In the summer played Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! her first warped tour . As part of this tour, the group played on the Ernie Ball Stage . The single In Friends We Trust can also be found on the Warped Tour 2012 compilation . The group played new songs for the first time on the Warped Tour. In November and December the group was the main support from Woe, Is Me on their Talk Your [S] # ?! Tour .

In January 2013, studio work began with producer Joey Sturgis on the follow-up album to Something for Nothing in Michigan . The album is due to be released worldwide on April 30, 2013. As part of the Soundwave , Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! for the first time five concerts in Australia . These concerts took place from February 23 to March 4, 2013 in Adelaide , Sydney , Perth , Brisbane and Melbourne . The group started a smaller concert tour with Handguns, State Champs and City Lights as support, before the band played the South by So What !? played. In addition, the band was together with Of Mice & Men Support for the first half of the tour of A Day to Remember's Right Back at It Again tour . As a result, the actually Pardon My French Tour with For All Those Sleeping , Upon This Dawning and City Lights had to be postponed as support. A tour to support Blood on the Dance Floor and Miss May I was also planned for the fall .

In the meantime, Pardon My French has been reissued with several bonus titles. Between June and August 2014 the group was part of the Warped Tour . Shortly after the tour ended, drummer Jonathan Donnaes announced his departure from the band. He made this decision back in 2013. Bastien Lafaye became the new drummer.

Since 2015: Get Lost, Find Yourself

On March 11, 2015, Fearless Records announced that the group's new album would be released on May 19, 2015. This album is called Get Lost, Find Yourself . The album was produced in Los Angeles with Kyle Black, who has worked with Comeback Kid , The Color Morale and New Found Glory .

In 2018 the band completed a tour of Japan. After the group had been quiet for a long time, they announced in May 2020 that they would be working on new music.

style

Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! are known for their pop-punk-like sound, which the group combines with heavy metal and hardcore influences. This mix is referred to in the scene as " Easycore ". The lyrics are all written in English , although the musicians initially struggled with language problems. Due to the use of keyboards and the influence of dance music, the music style can also be described as trancecore .

Critics described the music as a mix of pop-punk , melodic hardcore and metalcore . Due to the insertions of electronic dance music , the group's sound is often referred to as Easycore or even “Popcore”. In addition, the band's critics attributed the groups A Day to Remember , New Found Glory and Four Year Strong as musical influences. Even if critics often compare the group with these bands, the musicians vehemently deny that they are mentioned as a musical influence.
