The Wanne-Eickel Jewish cemetery is located on Dürerstrasse in the Wanne-Süd district of the city of Herne .

history

Until it was dissolved by the Bochum synagogue community in 1907, the Wanne-Eickel community formed part of it. This repeatedly led to disputes about the cost of maintaining the burial site on Dürerstrasse.

It was probably created around 1843 at the latest. After an exchange of letters from 1887 on the occasion of the entry of the property in the new land register , the place has been used for burials for over 44 years. In 1856, the 627 m² plot of land was acquired by Simon Readers from the Bickern community. In this context, the mayor Elverfeld in Horst stated that “the Jewish cooperative had owned the intended burial place for many years”.

After the establishment of the synagogue community Wanne-Eickel , the complex was maintained on a larger scale. In 1921 the garden was redesigned, and in 1931 the property was enclosed with a wall. A planned expansion was not implemented after the National Socialists came to power . Those of the Jewish faith who died in Eickel after 1945 were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Gelsenkirchen-Bulmke .

Graves in honor of Jewish fallen in World War I are not found on any of the facilities in Wanne-Eickel, as their traces were removed during the National Socialist era .
