Fall Out Boy is an alternative rock band from Wilmette , a suburb of Chicago , formed in 2001 . The band consists of guitarists Patrick Stump and Joe Trohman , bassist Pete Wentz and drummer Andy Hurley .

With Wentz as lyricist and Stump as composer , Fall Out Boy had commercial success with their first major label debut album, From Under the Cork Tree . Released in 2005, the album won numerous awards as well as double platinum in the United States . In 2006 the band made their first major tour.

Her album Infinity on High , released in 2007, was even more successful than its predecessor. With over 260,000 units sold in the first week of sales, it took first place on the Billboard 200 . The pre-released single This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race debuted at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for several weeks. In the summer of 2007 the band played at the Live Earth concert in New York and then went on the worldwide Honda Civic Tour .

On February 2, 2010, the band announced a "break for an indefinite period", but without giving an official press statement. Meanwhile, lead singer Stump said in an interview that the band had definitely not broken up, but rather took a break while individual band members worked on various projects.

On February 4, 2013, the band announced their "reunion" and announced a new album entitled Save Rock and Roll for April 15, 2013. In January 2015 the album American Beauty / American Psycho was released . Her seventh studio album Mania was released on January 19, 2018 .

Band history

The beginnings

Joe Trohman and Pete Wentz got to know each other through acting in the Chicago hardcore punk scene. Already in their early youth they played in different bands, which never lasted long. In 2001 they therefore decided to found a band that more closely matched their youth idols such as Green Day , Descendents , The Smiths or The Offspring . When Trohman met Patrick Stump, he introduced him to Wentz. After the first contact, they talked about the band Neurosis , which both were interested in. Stump was supposed to be the band's drummer, but quickly got on as the band's singer without having any prior knowledge. Wentz brought his friend Andy Hurley, with whom he had already played in various other bands, as a drummer in the band. Together the four quickly developed their own style. Wentz was the actual front man of Fall Out Boy: he wasn't the lead singer, but wrote most of the songs and also communicated with the audience during the band's performances.

The name "Fall Out Boy" came about when the band asked the audience for a suitable name at a university party, their third concert. Then a fan suggested "Fall Out Boy", which the band quickly agreed on. Mainly the name came from the series The Simpsons , where Fall Out Boy is the sidekick of Radioactive Man .

2002 to 2006

Due to the great enthusiasm that they sparked during their performances, they were quickly motivated to record their first demo tape and send it to various record companies - and they were immediately encouraged. With the support of Uprising Records , they released their first album in 2003, Fall Out Boy's Evening Out with Your Girlfriend . A little later, Fall Out Boy signed another record deal with Fueled by Ramen and released the second album, Take This to Your Grave , that same year . With the singles Grand Theft Autumn (Where Is Your Boy) and Saturday the band landed their first successes and achieved gold status with the album in the USA. The song Reinventing the Wheel to Run Myself Over was used in the Burnout 3: Takedown soundtrack.

In the summer of 2003, the band signed another record deal with Island Records . There she released the acoustic EP My Heart Will Always Be the B-Side to My Tongue on May 18, 2004 .

In the early summer of 2005, she released the sequel From Under the Cork Tree . The album received a huge boost from the headlines Wentz had gotten into a few weeks earlier when he nearly died from an antidepressant overdose . However, he later denied having attempted suicide with the drugs. From Under the Cork Tree reached number 9 on the US charts, with over 68,000 units sold in its first week. The album went double-platinum in the US for over 2.5 million units sold in the United States alone. The single Dance, Dance was used on the Burnout: Revenge soundtrack.

The single Sugar, We're Goin Down reached # 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The matching music video has received several awards. The band was nominated for a 2006 Grammy Award in the Best New Artist category. The next single, A Little Less Sixteen Candles, a Little More "Touch Me" , could not build on the success of the first two singles.

The band performed in 2005 together with others such as The Starting Line , Motion City Soundtrack , Panic! at the Disco and Boys Night Out on the Nintendo Fusion Tour . This was followed by other appearances on the Black Clouds and Underdogs Tour together with The All-American Rejects , Well-Known Secret , Hawthorne Heights and From First to Last .

2007: Infinity on High

Fall Out Boy's album Infinity on High was released on March 2, 2007 in Germany . In the US, the album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 with over 260,000 units sold in the first week of sales after the album was released. The first single from the album This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race entered the German single charts at number 54 in the first week. In the US, the single reached the second place in the Billboard Hot 100 , making it the highest debut of a rock band since I Do not Want to Miss a Thing by Aerosmith was made in 1998. The video premiered on December 19, 2006 on MTV. At MTV TRL it climbed to number 1 in the first week.

The album Infinity on High achieved platinum status in the US and gold in Australia . The second single was the title Thnks for th Mmrs . The video had its world premiere on March 23, 2007 on the band's official website. The third single on the album is "The Take Over, the Breaks Over" .

Fall Out Boy attended the Live Earth concerts on July 7, 2007 in New York City. Her songs 7 Minutes in Heaven and Snitches and Talkers Get Stitches and Walkers are part of the soundtrack of the computer game FlatOut 2 . The band can also be heard on Timbaland's album Shock Value . Fall Out Boy toured worldwide with the Honda Civic Tour after its release to further promote the album. Fall Out Boy appeared with +44 , Cobra Starship , The Academy Is ... and Paul Wall , among others .

On March 18, 2008, Fall Out Boy performed in Antarctica . This made them the first band to perform on every continent to be included in the Guinness Book of Records .

On April 11th, 2008 their first live DVD was released, entitled Live in Phoenix . The DVD was recorded on June 22, 2007 during a performance at the Cricket Wireless Pavilion in Phoenix , Arizona . During the concert, the band covered Michael Jackson's Beat It , and John Mayer also acted as guitarist on it.

Fall Out Boy is on the album Paper Trail of rapper T.I. heard in the song Out in the Cold .

2008: Citizens for Our Betterment

Wentz started a viral campaign on August 18, 2008 to advertise the next album, Folie à deux . The campaign started when the Decaydance Records website was hacked by Citizens for Our Betterment (CFOB). However, the project failed when Wentz found out it wasn't his organization that hacked the website. The day after the campaign began, Ashlee Simpson publicly announced that the site had been hacked. The band Copeland also started a campaign with the same background as Fall Out Boy.

2008: Folie à deux

Fall Out Boy released their fifth studio album, Folie à deux , on December 12th, 2008 , which is very different in sound from its predecessors. Many artists worked on the album such as Elvis Costello , Lil Wayne , Brendon Urie from Panic! at the Disco, Gabe Saporta from Cobra Starship, Travie McCoy from Gym Class Heroes , Doug, Alex DeLeon from The Cab , William Beckett from The Academy Is…, Deborah Harry from Blondie and Pharrell Williams with. This album includes the singles I Don't Care , What a Catch, Donnie and America's Suitehearts .

In January 2009 the Believers Never Die Tour Part Deux started with Cobra Starship, Metro Station , All Time Low and Hey Monday . Fall Out Boy also appeared with Kanye West and Kid Rock at the Youth Ball for President Barack Obama's inauguration .

On April 27, 2009 the EP America's Suitehearts: Remixed, Retouched, Rehabbed and Retoxed was released. It contains a remix by blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus . Fall Out Boy formed along with Weezer , the opening acts of blink-182S Summer Reunion Tour in 2009.

2009: Greatest Hits - Believers Never Die

2010–2012: side projects

In 2010 the band announced an indefinite hiatus. During this time, the band members devoted themselves to other projects: Stump released his solo album SoulPunk on October 18, 2011 , but withdrew from the limelight a few months later in order to work more as a producer. Trohman and Hurley formed the band The Damned Things along with other musicians and released their debut album called Ironiclast in 2010 . In 2012 Trohman toured with the band With Knives , whose first album Schadenfreude was released on April 17, 2012. Meanwhile, Hurley was active in the band Enabler : The band released their debut album All Hail the Void in the summer of 2012 . Wentz founded the band Black Cards together with Bebe Rexha and two other musicians. After the exit of Rexha and the guitarist Spencer Peterson , the style of this band changed drastically. Black Cards now appeared in twos (Wentz and Peterson) as an electronic pop DJ duo and released a mixtape in early 2012 and the EP Use Your Disillusion in July 2012 .

2013: Reunification and Save Rock and Roll

On February 4, 2013, the band announced that after a three-year hiatus, a reunion was imminent and an album release entitled Save Rock and Roll was planned for May 2013. At the same time, My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up), a first single was released on the Internet. The album was released on April 12, 2013 after the exact release date had already been announced on February 13.

The Youngblood Chronicles

On the day of the official reunification, the band released a music video for the first single My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up) . There should be a music video for every song on the album. All of these music videos are linked by a coherent plot. In the first video, old CDs, instruments and records are burned. At the end of the video you see the band tied up and sitting in the back of a van with bags on their heads. The second video for the song The Phoenix tells the story behind the first video. Stump carries a mysterious suitcase with him and little by little all the band members are kidnapped by mysterious women. It is shown how the kidnappers amputate Stump's hand. The third video for Young Volcanoes shows singer Stump sitting at a richly laid table. The other band members are brought in and also seated at the table. Shortly afterwards, everyone is drugged and celebrates with the kidnappers, who wear pig masks. You can also see that Stump has a large scar on his stomach and that organs were obviously removed and later unknowingly eaten by the band. In the fourth video for Alone Together , all band members are individually held and tortured. At the beginning you can see the mysterious suitcase being handed over to a woman sitting in a limousine with the license plate “Ratatat”. In the course of the video, Wentz is able to free himself as well as rapper Big Sean , who was also held captive, on his escape . Wentz finds Stump and sticks a pirate hook on his bloody stump. Then Stump's eyes glow yellow. Then Wentz is drugged again and all band members are brought back into the van. They are observed by Big Sean, who apparently escaped from the building without being noticed.

Then you can see the band in the lit van in the video The Mighty Fall , which follows the story of the first video. However, the band can break free from the burning van. However, children armed with daggers, baseball bats and various weapons try to stop the band members. The band breaks up and runs away. Stump is followed by a boy with a tape recorder. When he turns it on, a melody sounds, to which Stump falls into a kind of trance or hypnosis. His eyes glow yellowish. But the rapper Big Sean kills the boy and turns off the tape recorder. Stumps eyes stop glowing and he runs away. However, Big Sean is killed by the women with the help of an ax.

In the following video, all band members wake up looking for help: Stump finds it with a woman, played by Foxes, and gets into her pick-up. Little by little they collect all band members. Foxes takes everyone to a hospital. Her eyes then turn black. She presses a button on the radio and the melody is played from the cassette recorder. Stump's eyes turn yellow again and he follows the other band members in order to kill them.

In the video Where Did The Party Go, Stump wanders through the hospital to kill the band members who were hiding from him. Meanwhile, he imagines he's at a party. However, he finds guitarist Trohman hidden in the closet and kills him. Wentz and Hurley come in and see the dead Trohman. Stump wakes up again from his trance and sees what he has done and is desperate.
