From Under the Cork Tree is the third studio album by the American rock band Fall Out Boy . It was released on May 3, 2005 on Island Records , making it the band's first album on a major label .

Emergence

Work on the album began in late 2004 when the band moved to Burbank, California together to work on the songs together. The working hours were repeatedly interrupted by doubts, so that the band wrote eight more songs shortly before the start of the recording, including Sugar, We're Goin 'Down , the most successful single on the album. All lyrics were written by Pete Wentz, Patrick Stump composed the music. The recordings themselves lasted from November 2004 to January 2005.

In February 2005, bassist Pete Wentz attempted suicide with an Ativan overdose . This helped that the band became better known in the media. The album itself was released on May 3, 2005 in North America, a week later it was also released in German-speaking countries.

The name From Under the Cork Tree is derived from the children's book Ferdinand, the bull (English. The Story of Ferdinand ). The book is about the bull Ferdinand, rather than in the arena during bullfight to compete, rather under a cork oak (Engl. Cork tree ) sits on a lawn and sniff the flowers.

Awards

reception

The opinion of the music critics was very different, but mostly the album only achieved average ratings.

Plattentests.de awards 6 out of 10 points. Critic Jochen Gedwien thinks that the album is easy to hear, but sometimes quite faceless. In his opinion, positive aspects are the many details of the album and the tracks Dance, Dance and XO . The long song names and the associated low recognition value are the negative aspects in his opinion.

On laut.de the album only received 2 out of 5 stars. In the opinion of critic Mathias Möller, the album becomes more and more boring the longer it is played. In terms of production, he sees the album on a good level and also dance, dance is praised by him. However, he says that the album will not be remembered for long and that Fall Out Boy decided against artistic quality and for mass appeal.

Johnny Loftus from allmusic.com has a completely different opinion. He gives the album 4.5 out of 5 stars, and Allmusic lists it as an album tip. He writes that Fall Out Boy could no longer be imagined with this album from the summer.
