Folie à deux (dt. Madness for two ) is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Fall Out Boy . It was released in German-speaking countries on December 12, 2008 on Island Records , four days later also in the United States.

Emergence

Shortly after the previous album Infinity on High was released in winter 2007, the band began writing new songs. This process was curtailed by a record attempt by the band, in which they tried to perform on all seven continents within nine months. However, the performance at a research station in Antarctica had to be canceled due to bad weather and the impossible flight connection. In April 2008 the decision was made to go to the studio, the recordings with the British guitarist John Mayer for the cover version of the Michael Jackson song Beat It delayed the development process.

In June 2008, Stump and Wentz met with producer Neal Avron in his house to write their first concrete songs. Bassist Wentz revealed in an interview that “the new songs sound like AC / DC and The White Stripes .” He also announced that they would record in a studio in Los Angeles in the summer. The following month, Wentz and Stump often met at Stump's house to compose new songs. As with the previous albums, Stump was mainly responsible for the music, while Wentz was responsible for the lyrics. Producer Avron planned to keep the cast simple and singer Stumo said in an interview that the US election campaign was influencing the writing process so that the lyrics were political.

The actual recording began in the summer of 2008 in two studios in Los Angeles. By that time the band had composed around 50 new songs. In order to have more freedom in creating albums, Fall Out Boy did not inform her music label. The last recordings were made in September when the guest musicians were played. Collaborations have been made with Pharrell Williams and Elvis Costello and Brendon Urie from Panic! made at the disco . A collaboration with Kanye West was also planned, but this had to be canceled due to lack of time. The strings and the subsequent post-production took place in studios in New York City . The sound engineer Ted Jensen was responsible for the mastering, in whose Sterling Studios the post-production took place.

Artwork

As with the previously released albums, the American artist Pamela Littky was responsible for designing the cover. The front cover itself shows a picture by the painter Luke Chueh, on which a person disguised as a bear carries another bear piggyback. According to Chueh, the disguised person should represent the fan base and the bear that it is dangerous to adore a band too much. The background is completely red.

Reviews

The album received mostly positive reviews from critics. Metacritic calculated an average of 73/100 of 21 professional reviews and thus assigns the predicate gene rally favorable (dt. Basically positive ). Compared to the previous album Infinity on High, the album came off two points worse.

The album received great praise from The AV Club , where the album received the school grade A, which corresponds to a German 1. Critic Kyle Ryan particularly praises the stylistic and instrumental variety of the album. Ryan also compares some of the songs on the album with those of well-known rock bands. So remind him Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes at Baba O'Riley by The Who , the harmonies of America's Suitehearts and What a Catch, Donnie to the Beatles , 20 US dollars Nose Bleed 've resemblance to Chicago during her Saturday in the Park -Ärä.

James Reed of the Boston Globe also rates the album positively. In his opinion, the band took a few detours that paid off. These include, among other things, the guest appearances of some musicians, especially that of rapper Lil Wayne .

Rolling Stone also gives a positive rating with 3.5 out of 5 possible stars . Critic Jody Rosen especially praises the "mixture between genres, times, tempos and sometimes in just one song." The narcissism and self-irony of the lyrics are also praised. Rosen describes the voice of Stumps as a “voice that brings the R&B chords to life and is well staged” , Stump himself as an “inconspicuous, blue-eyed soul star” .

The German trade press is less positive about the album. Matthias Reichel from CDstarts.de thinks about the album that the "put together album is nothing more than hot air" . He also says that the band's talent is hidden by songs that are too adapted. The album initially made a good impression, but too much kitsch would ruin it. The grading is 5.5 out of 10 points.

The album is rated similarly by Plattentests.de . Critic Sven Cadario awards 4 out of 10 possible points and describes the album as "inflated nothing" . All in all there are some nice songs, but thanks to too much “banal pop music” the album is not even at average level.

Laut.de also gives it a below-average rating with 2 out of 5 stars. Critic Tobias Litterst writes that the positive sides of the album "all too often get lost in the pompous overall sound and therefore remain unrecognizable." He also criticizes the production and the chorus-heaviness, which would bring the good lyrical approaches into the background.

Whiskey-soda.de is even more negative . The album gives the impression that it was recorded in one day, as almost all the songs sound the same. For listeners who like the first song, the album is very suitable, for everyone else, Folie à deux is not suitable.
