The 2006 MTV Video Music Awards were presented on August 31, 2006 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City to music videos that premiered from June 11, 2005 to June 26, 2006. The moderator was the actor Jack Black .

For the first time, viewers were able to have a say in which music videos were awarded. This affected all artist categories (Best Video, Best Male, Female and Group Videos as well as all genre categories). The artistic categories (Best Direction, Best Cinematography, for example), however, continued to be awarded by employees of the music industry. The Breakthrough Video category has been removed.

The show is considered one of the weakest editions of the show and was perceived as uninteresting. Only 5.77 million viewers saw the award. Compared to the previous year that was a loss of 28% (8 million).

Shakira and the Red Hot Chili Peppers were nominated the most with seven categories each. Avenged Sevenfold won Best New Artist and I Write Sins Not Tragedies from Panic! at the Disco was the first video since This Note's for You by Neil Young ( 1989 ) which won the top prize Video of the Year without winning another award.
