The 35th ceremony of the MTV Video Music Awards took place on August 20, 2018 for the twelfth time in the Radio City Music Hall of New York City instead.

The American rapper Cardi B was nominated a total of 12 times and topped the list of nominees. Together with Childish Gambino she also received the most prizes, namely three each.

The video of the year came from Camila Cabello , who also became Artist of the Year. Jennifer Lopez became the first Latin American artist to receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award .

In a speech, Madonna remembered the artist Aretha Franklin , who died shortly before the awards , but received a lot of criticism because her speech had more to do with her than with Franklin. In fact, according to her own statements, Madonna was taken by surprise. She hadn't planned a speech at all and had been asked by the organizers to include a few anecdotes from their shared experiences. The speech was never planned as a tribute.

As in 2017, the odds were also rather bad in 2018. Only 2.2 million households followed the award ceremony on MTV and only 4.87 million on other networks.
