Grace VanderWaal in 2018

Grace Avery VanderWaal (born January 15, 2004 in Lenexa , Kansas ) is an American singer, songwriter and model . She began her musical career by posting videos of her original songs and covers on YouTube , as well as performing on "open mic" nights near her home in Suffern, New York. In September 2016, when she was 12 years old, she won the eleventh season of the NBC talent show America's Got Talent , singing only her own original songs. In December 2016 VanderWaal released their first EP Perfectly Imperfect on Columbia Records. She has also appeared in the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas , in Madison Square Garden , at the opening and closing events of the Special Olympics Winter Games in Austria , at various benefit concerts, the Austin City Limits Music Festival and on various talk shows on US television . VanderWaal won the Radio Disney Music Award 2017 for Best Newcomer and a Teen Choice Award , was twice included in Billboard Magazine 's “21 Under 21” list of rapidly emerging new music stars and received the “Billboard Women in Music Rising Star Award ".

In November 2017 VanderWaal released their first full studio album Just the Beginning and toured North America with it. In the summer of 2018, she was also touring North America with the rock group Imagine Dragons on their "Evolve World Tour". She also made her acting debut in Disney's TV film Stargirl in 2020 .

Life

Grace VanderWaal was born in the Kansas City metropolitan area and lives with her parents Tina and David VanderWaal and their three-year-old sister Olivia in Suffern , New York . She also has an older brother named Jakob.

At the age of 11 she bought a ukulele with the money she got for her birthday , inspired by a visit from a friend of the family from Brazil who played her ukulele. She taught herself to play with the help of YouTube videos. She also played the saxophone in her school band and piano. After she had learned to play the ukulele, she began to gain experience in front of an audience at “Open Mic Night” performances in a café near her home.

In 2016 she participated in the eleventh season of the US NBC - talent show America's Got Talent in part, they won with only self-penned songs in the final on 14 September 2016 and a prize of one million US dollars received. In addition, she was able to conclude a recording contract with Columbia Records .

Career

2016 to 2017: America's Got Talent and beyond

During the "Auditions" broadcast on NBC on June 7, 2016, Vanderwaal introduced herself with her self-composed song I Don't Know My Name and was able to convince the audience and the jury. Juror Howie Mandel then sent her straight to the quarter-finals of the live shows with the "Golden Buzzer". Simon Cowell called Vanderwaal "the next Taylor Swift ." In the quarterfinals on August 23, she sang her song Beautiful Thing , a song she wrote for her sister. In the semifinals on August 30th she performed the song Light the Sky and in the finals on September 13th she sang Clay , a song about dealing with bullying .

In the last big two-hour final show on September 14th, Vanderwaal sang the song I Don't Know My Name again . At the end of the show, she was announced as the season 11 winner. VanderWaal was the second youngest winner in the show's ten-year history , after Bianca Ryan . In addition to the prize money, she received the opportunity to perform on four evenings in October 2016 at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas . Vanderwaal would like to use part of the prize money for charitable purposes for musical support.

On December 2, 2016 Columbia Records VanderWaals published debut - EP titled Perfectly Imperfect . The album contains, among other things, studio versions of the songs sung in America's Got Talent .

In March 2017, VanderWaal appeared together with Jason Mraz at the opening ceremony for the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017 in Austria . She also sang her songs I Don't Know My Name and Light the Sky at the closing event . On 30 April 2017 she joined the Radio Disney Music Awards with I Do not Know My Name , where she also received the award for best new artist.

2017 to 2018: IMG Models, debut album Just the Beginning & subsequent tour

On June 21, 2017, Vanderwaal released her single Moonlight , which she premiered the same day during VidCon's opening show , YouTube OnStage , at the Anaheim Convention Center arena in Anaheim , California . The single Sick of Being Told followed in August and won a Teen Choice Award . Vanderwaal also made a guest appearance on August 16, 2017 at America's Got Talent with a live performance of Moonlight . She was also signed by the modeling agency IMG Models to represent them. In September 2017 she was for the fashion designer Marc Jacobs at the New York Fashion Week . In addition, VanderWaal entered into a cooperation with the instrument maker Fender in order to develop their own “signature” ukulele series together with the manufacturer. She is the youngest artist and also the first ukulele player to work with Fender.

On November 3, 2017, Columbia Records released VanderWaal's debut album Just the Beginning , which was preceded by the first singles Moonlight and Sick of Being Told . She previously presented other songs from the album in two concerts on October 7 and 14, 2017 at the Austin City Limits Music Festival in Austin , Texas . On November 5th, she started her “Just the Beginning Tour” through North America in Los Angeles , California , which continued in February 2018. At the end of November 2017, Billboard magazine presented her with the Rising Star Award .

On March 30, 2018, the single Clearly , a reinterpretation of Johnny Nash's 1972 song I Can See Clearly Now, was released . From the beginning of June to August 2018 VanderWaal supported the American rock band Imagine Dragons as their " opening act " in the North American part of the Evolve World Tour .

2019: Opener for Florence and the Machine & Ur So Beautiful Tour

In 2019, VanderWaal released a number of singles: Stray in February. In March 2019, the song Hideaway , which can be heard in the film Willkommen im Wunder Park , was released. On June 28th came the single Ur So Beautiful , which she first performed publicly at the release party for Stray , and finally the single Waste My Time on the eve of the Ur So Beautiful tour .

In June she supported four tour stops for Florence and the Machine on their High as Hope tour.

The Ur So Beautiful tour ran from August 10 to September 21, with a stragglers date in November at the Wonderfront Festival in San Diego, during which VanderWaal introduced three new songs ( Don't like U on August 11 in Asheville, The City on August 13 in Nashville and Poser on September 2 in Fort Collins, Colorado). In the course of this tour VanderWaal announced a new EP for autumn, which should contain the three new pieces, and which was released in November 2019 ( Letters Vol. 1) . [outdated]
