The 11th Special Olympics World Winter Games took place from March 14th to 25th 2017 in Graz , Schladming and Ramsau in Austria .
Award
The Special Olympics governing body announced the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games at a meeting in Panama in 2012 . Austria hosted the Winter Games for the second time. The 1993 Special Olympics World Winter Games had already taken place in Austria - in Schladming and Salzburg .
Sports and competition venues
The sports represented at the disabled sports event were:
- figure skating
- Speed skating
- Floor hockey
- Floorball
- Snowshoeing
- Alpine skiing ( slalom , giant slalom and Super-G )
- Nordic skiing ( cross-country skiing )
- Snowboard (slalom, giant slalom and Super-G)
- Stock sport
Two demonstration competitions were also held with dancing and the Motor Activity Training Program (MATP).
The competition venues were in Graz, Schladming and Ramsau. The opening ceremony took place in the Planai Stadium in Schladming. The venues for the alpine ski and snowboard competitions were located in the Schladming districts of Rohrmoos and Untertal . The Nordic snowshoeing and Nordic skiing competitions were held in Ramsau. The Styrian capital Graz hosted the indoor competitions and the closing ceremony. The venues in the city were the city and exhibition hall Graz , the ice stadium Liebenau and the stadium Liebenau .
Attendees
Around 2,700 athletes from 107 nations took part in the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games. There were also 5,000 members and trainers.
