Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs (born April 9, 1963 in New York City ) is an internationally known American fashion designer who has been designing fashion under his full name since the mid-1980s. From 1997 to 2013 he also worked as creative director for Louis Vuitton . Since then, Jacobs has devoted himself entirely to his own fashion company, which has been owned by LVMH since 1997 .
biography
When Jacobs was seven, his father died and he grew up with his fashionable grandmother in Manhattan , who lived in The Majestic and taught Jacobs to knit. After finishing high school , Jacobs studied at Parsons The New School for Design , where he graduated in 1984. In his graduation collection, he showed hand-knitted sweaters by his grandmother, for which he won the Perry Ellis Golden Thimble Award and attracted the attention of the Perry Ellis fashion company .
Together with his business partner Robert Duffy, Jacobs brought out the first collection under his own name in 1986 with the support of the Japanese fashion group Onward Kashiyama. In 1987 he was the youngest designer to receive the Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).
In 1988 Jacobs became head designer of women's fashion at Perry Ellis and successfully revitalized the company's classic sportswear. In 1992 the CFDA awarded him the Womenswear Designer of the Year award, which he was to receive again in 1997 for his own label. When Jacobs presented his critically acclaimed, customer disdained " grunge " collection at Perry Ellis' in 1993 , of which no piece was to be produced, he was released from his duties. In the same year Jacobs founded his own company, Marc Jacobs International, together with Duffy . The high-priced Marc Jacobs women's collection garnered high praise from the critics and drew the attention of the traditional French house Louis Vuitton , which under Bernard Arnault took a third of Jacobs' company. In 1996 Jacobs established a Marc Jacobs men's line in the upper price segment.
From 1996 the Italian fashion label ICEBERG hired Jacobs as a design consultant. At the same time, the textile manufacturer Gilmar, owner of ICEBERG, produced the second line Marc Jacobs Look , which debuted successfully on the Japanese market, but was discontinued in the USA and finally worldwide.
In 1997, Bernard Arnault appointed Jacobs artistic director and, at Jacobs' urging, his business partner Robert Duffy as studio director at the traditional French house Louis Vuitton in Paris . The prêt-à-porter division was established at Louis Vuitton under Jacobs , and the company successfully collaborated with well-known artists such as Richard Prince , Takashi Murakami , the American graffiti designer Stephen Sprouse and Comme des Garçons for its bag collections . Other designers are responsible for Louis Vuitton's menswear, even though Jacobs was the creative director and therefore had overall responsibility. As a result, at the end of the men 's fashion shows , he appeared on the catwalk with the respective men's fashion designer, sometimes to the final applause. The employment of Jacobs at Louis Vuitton was, at Duffy's insistence, connected with the increase of LVMH's stake in Marc Jacobs International to 96% and the associated financing of the fashion label; LVMH owns only 33% of the trademark rights.
The first Marc Jacobs boutique opened in 1997 on Mercer Street ( SoHo ) in New York , and others followed over the years in the USA , London , Paris, São Paulo , Moscow , Istanbul and Asia . From 2001, came to his in Italy produced York New main label Marc Jacobs the niedrigpreisigere second line Marc by Marc Jacobs added for men and women for whom their own boutiques in the US, Central and South America, Berlin ( LP12 Mall of Berlin ), Amsterdam , Brussels , Paris, London, Copenhagen , Stockholm , Oslo , Athens , Milan , Lisbon , Porto , Madrid , the Middle East and Asia. At the beginning of 2015, the company announced that it would integrate the second line into the main line during the course of the year and thus give it up. The shops of the second line were either converted into boutiques on the main line or given up. The licensed children's collection Little Marc Jacobs has existed since 2005 .
Since 2001, several women's fragrances ( Marc Jacobs , Essence , Blush , Splash , Lola , Daisy , Dot , Honey , Mod Noir , Violet , Decadence etc.) and men's fragrances (including Marc Jacobs Men , Bang , Bang Bang ) have been sold under the name Marc Jacobs . as well as numerous variations of it. In addition, since 2006, once or twice a year collections with slight scents in the simple 300 ml bottle of launches, the seemingly ordinary names like Rain (dt. Rain ), Lemon (dt. Lemon ) or Cucumber (dt. Cucumber ), etc. wear and designed to be sprayed all over the body. The Marc Jacobs Beauty Collection with decorative cosmetics was launched in 2013 .
In 2007, Jacobs landed at number 8 on Out magazine's list of 50 Most Powerful Gay Men and Women in America . In 2009 the CFDA honored Jacobs with the International Award for his work at Louis Vuitton.
On October 1, 2013, Jacobs' activity as Artistic Director at Louis Vuitton, which he had begun in 1997, ended with the presentation of the 2014 spring / summer collection. In agreement with the parent company LVMH, Jacobs then concentrated on expanding the fashion line that traded under his own name based in New York. As part of a restructuring plan, after the second line Marc by Marc Jacobs was discontinued in 2015, Marc Jacobs stores were successively closed, including locations in Paris, London and Milan as well as three on New York's Bleecker Street (the Bookmarc bookstore remains ). At the beginning of 2017, the men's fashion of the main Marc Jacobs line was also given up after the corresponding production license agreement with the Italian textile manufacturer Staff International was terminated.
In 2017, there were Marc Jacobs boutiques in New York City (2 ×), Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Chicago and Boston as well as four outlets in New York, California, Nevada and Florida. The brand has its own stores (and outlets in selected cities) in London, Paris, Luxembourg, Copenhagen, Oslo, Baku, Dubai, Doha, Riyadh, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Macao as well as several locations in China and Japan ( numerous shops-in-shop).
Private
In March 2009, Jacobs became engaged to his significant other, Lorenzo Martone, and in June 2009 the couple announced Provincetown , Massachusetts as the location for their planned wedding . However, at the Brazil Foundation Gala at the Metropolitan Museum in September 2010, Martone announced that he would no longer have a relationship with Jacobs. In 2018 Jacobs got engaged again, this time to the model Charly Defrancesco.
