Takashi Murakami has received international feedback with his works. He studied at the Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku in Tokyo. He became internationally known for his paintings that primarily refer to the otaku subculture, taking their motifs out of their context and depicting them in isolation or bringing them into other contexts. The order to produce designs for the bag manufacturer Louis Vuitton attracted media attention. Since then, Murakami has been questioned on the one hand as an artist, on the other hand he is popular as a crossover between art and design or pop culture. This is underlined by the fact that Murakami designed the CD cover for the single Stronger and the cover design for the album Graduation by Kanye West in 2007 . In 2018 he contributed the cover to the debut album of Kids See Ghosts , a joint project by West and Kid Cudi .

Murakami himself calls his art Superflat . In doing so, he only refers to the lack of perspective and depth in his pictures in one of several dimensions. In his book The Meaning of the Nonsense of the Meaning , he formulates Superflat as a philosophical theory about Japanese culture.

In 2001 Murakami founded Kaikai Kiki Co. , which emerged from his previous studio, Hiropon Factory . Kaikai Kiki Co. is used for the production and marketing of the art objects themselves, but also that of merchandising items or cartoons. In addition to Murakami, Kaikai Kiki Co. also represents younger Japanese artists and arranges collaborations between the artists and fashion labels or the music scene.
