Kids See Ghosts is an American music project by rappers Kanye West and Kid Cudi . The duo are signed to GOOD Music ( Def Jam ) and released their self-titled debut album in June 2018.

prehistory

Kanye West became aware of Kid Cudi in 2008 when he released his first mixtape A Kid Named Cudi . He signed the seven-year-old talent at GOOD Music , paving the way for years of collaboration. For the first time, the two collaborated on the single Welcome to Heartbreak from West's fourth studio album 808s & Heartbreak . Moreover Cudi contributed to a track on the co-produced by West album The Blueprint 3 by Jay-Z at. West returned the favor in 2009 with contributions to Make Her Say on Cudi's debut album Man on the Moon: The End of Day and a year later Erase Me on the follow-up album. Cudi in turn contributed vocal parts to All of the Lights and Gorgeous from West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy .

In 2013 Cudi announced his departure from GOOD Music in order to develop musically in his own direction, but emphasized that Kanye West was still a "big brother". When he used an old recording of his protégé on his album Yeezus without his consent , Cudi felt offended. Still, he worked with West again on Father Stretch My Hands . In September 2016, Cudi made a sweeping blow against fellow scene colleagues on Twitter , including the name of his mentor. During a concert, West was initially disappointed, but forgave his protégé a short time later and called him "the most influential musician of the last 10 years". As part of the West's Saint Pablo Tour , the two entertained the audience together for the first time in years.

Both musicians are credited with a pioneering role in developing rap in a more experimental direction.

After Cudi sought treatment for depression and suicidal thoughts, and West had also struggled with mental health problems, rumors of a joint project first surfaced in July 2017 when the two were spotted leaving a studio in Los Angeles together . In August they paid a visit to the Japanese artist Takashi Murakami , which intensified the evidence of a collaboration. As part of Cudi's Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin ' tour , they performed together again in Chicago in November of the same year .

On April 19, 2018, Kanye West announced a seven-track album with Kid Cudi via Twitter. The publication of Kids Sea Ghosts took place just a week after that of his eighth studio album Ye and a few days before another, he produced GOOD Music albums by Nas and Teyana Taylor . The barely 24-minute album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and sold 142,000 copies in its first week. All seven tracks were able to place themselves in the US single charts , and the first collaboration album by the two artists received positive reviews. Anthony Fantano, for example, praised the work in the highest tones and awarded it the rare top grade of 10.

In an interview with Billboard , Kid Cudi promised further publications.
