My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is the fifth studio album by the American rapper Kanye West . It was released in Germany on November 19, 2010 on Roc-A-Fella and Def Jam and is assigned to the hip-hop genre. Most of the album was recorded in Hawaii in 2009 and 2010 .
The album entered the US charts at number one in its first week with 497,100 copies. In Germany, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy reached number 19 on the album charts.
Music genre
After a strongly electronic and emotional 808s & Heartbreak , which in its aesthetics was strongly behind the "trend", West steered back with his fifth album back to the style of the first three albums of the planned college tetralogy ( The College Dropout , Late Registration , Graduation ) and combines these into more opulent songs with complex structures and arrangements. The album covers topics such as decadence , pomp , escapism , sex , wealth , love and self-glorification, and self-doubt.
The first track begins with Nicki Minaj , who is performing part of Roald Dahl's Cinderella with a British accent . For "All of the Lights," West recruited Alicia Keys , John Legend , The-Dream , Fergie , Kid Cudi , Elton John , Ryan Leslie , Charlie Wilson , Tony Williams , Elly Jackson and Rihanna as additional singers. Elly Jackson said in an interview: "He gave me all these verses that I should sing with other artists and then wanted to layer his favorites from all over the world to get a unique texture in his songs." The second single " Runaway “has a piano motif that consists of a series of half and whole notes. The content of the song is largely self-criticism of West himself. "Lost in the World" uses parts of Bon Ivers "Woods" and merges into the last track "Who Will Survive in America". The latter is the album's coda . It is based on parts of Gil Scott-Heron's Comment No. 1".
History of origin
Most of the album was recorded in Honolulu ( Hawaii ). Additional recordings were in the Glenwood Place Studios in Burbank ( California ), the Electric Lady Studios and Platinum Sound Recording in New York made. According to reports, the cost of the recordings amounted to three million dollars . Regarding the recording process, West later said he was "hiding in Hawaii and bringing his favorite producers to his home" to work on and inspire his record. Artists who took part in this " Rap Camp ", as West called it, included Raekwon , The RZA , Pusha T , Rick Ross , Charlie Wilson , Big Sean , Prynce Cy Hi, Swizz Beatz , Dwele , Nicki Minaj , TI , Drake , Common , Jay-Z , Eminem , Lil Wayne , John Legend , Fergie , Rihanna , The-Dream , Ryan Leslie , Elton John , MIA , Justin Vernon , Seal , Beyoncé , Kid Cudi , Mos Def , Santigold , Alicia Keys , Elly Jackson , and Tony Williams . Producers who worked with West on the album were Q-Tip , The RZA, DJ Premier , Madlib , and Pete Rock .
In the studio in Hawaii, where the recordings for 808s & Heartbreak were also made, three rooms were booked during West's entire stay. West worked on different songs in parallel in several rooms. Complex reports said the songs were mixed day and night. The recordings always started in the evening, and West often slept in the studio. The preparation for the recordings varied from artist to artist, so many played basketball , Kid Cudi smoked marijuana and RZA did weight training.

The American artist George Condo designed the album cover. George Condo's paintings fetched over $ 1 million at art auctions.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy received consistent praise from critics. The FAZ wrote that the album was convincing “on album length. [...] It should be the album of the year. "Kanye West is an" ideal type, critic and protagonist of the capitalist rap world, the Gordon Gekko of hip hop. [...] 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' has become a masterpiece. A break free. With a clear, aggressive demeanor, West claims the place at the top. " Spiegel Online said the album was" shamelessly overloaded, so undisguised boastful and at the same time so touching in its childish desire for recognition and love that you simply cannot hate it. The hip-hop magazine MZEE called the album West's "Opus Magnum" a few years after it was released. There would be no album that “gives you a similarly overwhelming sense of size. This is triggered, for example, by the anthemic opener Dark Fantasy , the epic Power or All of the Lights . The latter track has an all-star lineup that couldn't be more impressive. That was nice, but also kind of boring. Now he has given up the zeitgeist and discovered megalomania as a possibility of total artistic independence. And produced real classics in the process. Based on 45 English-language reviews, Metacritic aggregates a Metascore of 94 out of 100 possible points, making it the highest average rating of the year and one of the best-recorded albums of the new millennium.
The music magazine Rolling Stone rated My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy with rare highest rating of 5 stars, saying that Kanye West "let everyone else in the radio ridiculously modest sound. He also questions the listener, however: Kanye West thinks you are an idiot if you are satisfied with an artist who is less enthusiastic than him. And that means almost everyone. ”The album was voted number one of the 30 best albums of 2010 by the magazine. It also ranks 353rd out of the 500 best albums of all time .
The New Musical Express voted My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy 24th out of the 500 best albums of all time.
In the not yet final selection of the 100 best albums of the 2010s by Pitchfork Media , the album reached number 1 (as of August 2014).
In a 2013 list published by the US magazine Entertainment Weekly, the album was ranked 8th of the 100 best albums of all time.
The German magazine Musikexpress ranks it number 5 of the 50 best albums of the new millennium.
At the 2012 Grammy Awards was My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in the category Best Rap Album award.
