Pete Rock
Pete Rock (born June 21, 1970 in Mount Vernon , New York ; real name Peter Phillips ) is an American DJ , producer and rapper .
Life
He first came into the focus of the hip-hop community in the late 1980s as a DJ on Marley Marl's radio show In Control With Marley Marl on New York's WBLS. In 1991 he began recording music as Pete Rock & CL Smooth with his partner CL Smooth . Since then he has been one of the most sought-after producers of the genre and had a significant influence on East Coast hip-hop in the mid-1990s.
It was more than four years before he returned to hip-hop audiences in 1998 with his solo debut Soul Survivor . Since then he has released an instrumental album PeteStrumentals in 2001 and the follow-up to his debut album , Soul Survivor II , in 2004 .
Pete Rock's album NY's Finest includes songs with Little Brother , Redman , Slum Village , Raekwon , The Lox and Papoose , among others .
In 2011 Pete Rock released the album Monumental with Smif-N-Wessun . The continuation of the instrumental album PeteStrumentals , on which a track in memory of J Dilla can be found, was released in 2015.
