Career

In the club

Matthew Le Tissier was born in Saint Peter Port , Guernsey , the second largest of the Channel Islands under the crown possession of the British Crown , and began playing football at Vale Recreation , a club in the Parish Saint Sampson . There you noticed his talent early on. During a football game with the U-15 team, he was discovered by the then Premier League club Southampton FC and finally signed in May 1985. At the beginning of the 1986/87 season he was equipped with a professional contract and made his debut for the first team on September 2, 1986. He quickly became popular with fans and was nicknamed "Le God". Nevertheless, due to the way he played, there was always criticism from the public. Despite everything, he quickly had a regular place in the team.

His best season was probably 1993/94 when he scored 25 goals and finished third on the scorers list behind Andy Cole and Alan Shearer , although Southampton was only 18th in the Premier League. At the end of the 1994/1995 season he won the election for "Goal of the Season" with a goal from 30 meters against the Blackburn Rovers . His 100th goal for Southampton in the league Le Tissier scored on April 1, 2000 in the home game against Sunderland FC one minute before the end of the game. He scored his last competitive goal in May 2001 in a 3-2 home win against Arsenal , in the last game at Southampton's old stadium The Dell . Over 32,000 spectators came to his farewell game in the newly built St. Mary's Stadium .

With 162 league goals scored, Le Tissier is second behind Mick Channon on the all-time goalscorer list for Southampton FC.

National team

Since Le Tissier comes from the Channel Islands , which are neither part of the United Kingdom nor a crown colony , but are directly subordinate to the British Crown, Le Tissier was able to choose among the associations of the Home Nations . He decided on the English association . For the English national soccer team , Le Tissier was used eight times under coach Terry Venables . His successor Glenn Hoddle then did not nominate Le Tissier for the 1998 World Cup . As a reason for the non-nomination, the coach stated that Le Tissier did not fit into the team.

After retiring as a footballer, he worked as an expert on the “Soccer Saturday” program on Sky Sports.
