He then began a career in Germany as a professional football player and played a. a. in the 1990s with SG Wattenscheid 09 ; During this time, Souleymane met Leroy's mother, who was also active as a professional athlete and won numerous German championships as well as the bronze medal in rhythmic gymnastics at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles .

Leroy Sané grew up in the Bochum district of Wattenscheid not far from the Lohrheidestadion . He made his high-school diploma at the Berger Feld Comprehensive School in Gelsenkirchen . His two brothers are also soccer players. The older one played for the second team of 1. FC Nürnberg , the younger one in the youth department of FC Schalke 04.

Club career

youth

Sané, who counts Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho among his role models, began playing football at SG Wattenscheid 09 in 2001, where his father Souleymane Sané had been active in professional football for years. After four years he switched to the youth team at FC Schalke 04 and then to Bayer 04 Leverkusen for three years . In 2010 he was West German champion with Bayer. In 2011 he returned to the “ Knappenschmiede ”, the youth performance center of FC Schalke 04.

FC Schalke 04

In the following two years, Sané was mostly only used as a substitute. In 2012 and 2013 he won the Westphalia Cup with the U17 and 2012 West German champions. In the 2013/14 season he was, now in the U19, one of the most important players in Norbert Elgert's squad .

Also due to his performances in the UEFA Youth League , Sané received a professional contract from the 2015/16 season. In March 2014, the FC Schalke 04 squad was weakened due to several failures, so that Sané was part of the professional team on March 28, 2014. However, it was not used. On April 20, 2014, he made his Bundesliga debut in the 3-1 defeat in the away game against VfB Stuttgart , when he came on for Max Meyer in the 77th minute . It was his only Bundesliga game in the 2013/14 season .

For the 2014/15 season he was in the extended squad of the professional team. He scored his first goal in the Bundesliga on December 13, 2014 in the home game against 1. FC Köln to make it 1: 2. He played his first Champions League game on March 10, 2015 in the second leg of the round of 16 against Real Madrid , when he came on for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in the 29th minute . In the 4-3 win, he scored one goal and prepared another. At the end of the season he had scored three goals in 13 Bundesliga games and prepared another. In the final of the U19 championship round, Sané was involved in winning the title.

For the 2015/16 season, Sané established himself in the professional squad. From the fifth to the seventh match day of the Bundesliga, he scored a decisive goal in every game. Due to his performance, he moved into the focus of Joachim Löw and the senior national team . Sané played all 17 games of the first half of the season, scored four goals and prepared four more goals. In the Europa League , he scored a goal in five group games and gave one assist. In the media he was referred to as the shooting star of the first half of the season . In the second half of the season he also scored four goals and prepared two more. He missed a league game. His contract at Schalke 04 ran until 2019.

Manchester City

In August 2016, Sané moved to Manchester City in the Premier League . He received a contract that runs until June 30, 2021. Although both clubs had agreed not to disclose the transfer fee, German media estimated the transfer fee at around 50 million euros and the move as the most expensive transfer of a German football player to date. In his first season for Manchester City, he appeared under head coach Pep Guardiola in 26 league games (20 times from the start) and scored five goals. In the 2017/18 season , Sané was able to further improve its performance. He was used 32 times (27 times from the start) in the Premier League, scoring 10 goals. Sané won the English championship and the League Cup with City and was voted the best young player in the Premier League. In August 2018, he won the English Supercup . Also in the 2018/19 season , Sané was English champion with City as well as FA Cup and League Cup winners. He was used in 31 league games, in which he again scored 10 goals, but only played 21 times from the start.

Before the start of the 2019/20 season , speculation arose that Sané could move to FC Bayern Munich , which the wingers Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben had left. The then Bayern coach Niko Kovač said in an interview with ZDF at the end of July that he was very confident and expected to get Sané. In early August, the German tore a cruciate ligament while winning the Supercup against Liverpool . After the attacker returned to team training at the end of January 2020, he made his comeback with the U23 around a month later. This was followed by a deployment in the Premier League before Sané left the club at the beginning of July before the end of the season, which had to be postponed to the end of July due to the COVID-19 pandemic . He will no longer take part in the final tournament of the 2019/20 Champions League in August.

FC Bayern Munich

For the 2020/21 season, Sané moved to FC Bayern Munich , where he signed a contract until June 30, 2025, where he will wear the number 10 on his back.

National team

On his debut for a selection of the DFB , Sané scored the winning goal in the 67th minute in the 3-2 win of the U19 national team in the international test match against the Netherlands on September 5, 2014 at Sportpark Höhenberg in Cologne . At the U19 European Championship in Greece , he was used in all three group games without scoring a goal, and was eliminated with the team as the last-placed in the group stage.

On September 3, 2015, he played for the German U21 national team for the first time in a friendly against Denmark at the Lohmühle in Lübeck . On October 9, 2015, he scored his first two goals for the U21s in the European Championship qualifier against Finland in a 4-0 win. He prepared another gate.

His debut for the German senior team , he completed on 13 November 2015 when he when of terrorist attacks overshadowed friendly at Stade de France in Saint-Denis against France came on. He was a member of the national team for the Euro 2016 in France . His only appearance was in the semi-finals against hosts France , when he came on when he was 2-0 down at the end. The German team lost and retired.

For the 2018 World Cup , Sané was included in the preliminary roster, but was not part of the final squad for the tournament in Russia . Joachim Löw's surprising decision not to take Sané to the tournament in Russia was controversially discussed in the media and often criticized. Long-time national team captain Michael Ballack also criticized Löw's decision. After all, Sané had become a junior player of the 2017/18 season in the Premier League . In November 2018, DFB Vice President Rainer Koch said in the sport1 broadcast Doppelpass that Sané's non-nomination had "internal reasons" rather than sporting ones. Löw disagreed with Koch's account and stated that he had never spoken to Koch about Sané's non-nomination.

In the international test match against the Russian national team on November 15, 2018 , he scored his first international goal for the senior team with a 1-0 win in a 3-0 win. Sané scored his first goal in a competitive game to make it 2-0 in a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League on November 19, 2018.

Style of play

Sané can be used variably in the midfield. His strengths include technique, dribbling, ball security and speed. Pep Guardiola, Sané's coach at Manchester City, disliked Sané's assignment on the defensive and his lack of willingness to press.
