Regina Weber
Regina Weber-Sané (born April 12, 1963 in Winsen (Luhe) ) is a former German gymnast. The multiple German champion is to this day the only Olympic medalist in rhythmic gymnastics from Germany.
Career
In the 1970s, Carmen Rischer was the outstanding German gymnast. The trained tailor Regina Weber replaced this and was the dominant athlete of this sport in Germany in the 1980s. At the 1981 World Cup in Munich Weber finished tenth, in 1983 in Strasbourg she was eighth. In 1984 rhythmic gymnastics was on the Olympic program for the first time. After the Olympic boycott of the Eastern Bloc, only three athletes, who were placed in the top ten in Strasbourg in 1983, competed at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles : the Romanian Doina Stăiculescu , the Spanish Marta Bobo and Regina Weber. These three athletes were then also in the favorite position. While the Spaniard failed and ultimately only finished 9th, the 23rd from Strasbourg, the Canadian Lori Fung , outdid herself and won gold in front of Stăiculescu and Weber.
Regina Weber won her first title at German championships in 1978, when she was still racing for Lüneburg. She later switched to TV Wattenscheid . In 1981 she lost with the clubs to Carmen Rischer, but won the other four titles. From 1982 to 1986 Weber won all five individual titles every year. In 1987 Weber finished second in all five individual decisions, and lost four times to Marion Rothaar . Then Weber ended her career.
After the career
Until the 1990s, Weber was seen on German advertising television in commercials for the mineral water Apollinaris . After her career, she studied design and, together with her husband Souleymane Sané, sells a self-designed sportswear collection. She is now a teacher at the Maria Sibylla Merian Comprehensive School in Bochum .
