Lori Fung

Lori Fung , CM , OBC (born February 21, 1963 in Vancouver ) is a former Canadian gymnast. In 1984 she was the first Olympic champion in rhythmic gymnastics .

Lori Fung, the daughter of a Chinese and a Canadian, began training with the Bulgarian-born Liliana Dimitrova in 1976. After Lori Fung had finished 23rd at the World Championships in 1983, nobody expected Lori Fung even after the Olympic boycott of the Eastern Bloc with the Soviet and Bulgarian gymnasts. But in the decision at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , she won ahead of the Romanian Doina Stăiculescu and the German Regina Weber .

Lori Fung was never able to build on this great success again. She ended her active career shortly before the 1988 Olympic Games. As a coach of the respective national teams, she was active in Canada, the United States and Mexico. She then returned to her native British Columbia as the sports director and trainer of the Club Elite Rhythmic Gymnastics.

Lori Fung is married to Dean Methorst and has two sons. In the movie Catwoman she was seen as a ballerina. Fung has been a member of the Order of Canada since 1985 and of the Order of British Columbia since 1990 . In 2004 she was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.
