As a child, she began to be interested in gymnastics and figure skating. She has been doing rhythmic gymnastics since she was 6 years old. Her talent was quickly recognized and at the age of 12 she switched to training in the nationwide gymnastics center in Moscow.

Athletic advancement

Already in 2006 she won the 17th edition of the Gymnastik International in Fellbach, Baden-Württemberg, with a lead of almost seven and a half points and also won all four individual disciplines (rope, ribbon, clubs and ball) in the master class. At this time, however, Kanajewa was still in the shadow of the then leading Russian gymnasts Vera Sessina and Olga Kapranova .

Career highlight in gymnastics

At the 2007 World Championships she won a gold medal with the Russian team and at the 2007 European Championships she won gold both with the team and individually with the ribbon. A year later she decided the individual all-around competition with almost two points during the next European championships.

Mark a career high point, the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing , where she could build on their previous successes and the individual all-around with a total of 75,500 points (rope: 18.850, Tires: 18.850, clubs: 18.950 and band: 18.850) in front of Inna Zhukova and Anna Bessonova won .

The year 2009 also began with sustained victories for Kanajewa. She secured five gold medals at the 2009 Summer Universiade in Belgrade , making herself one of the most successful athletes at the event. In addition to defending the team title and winning all individual titles at the European Championships in Baku, she won the Miss Valentine Cup in Estonia in February and the World Cup in Italy in May . She won the four individual disciplines at the World Games 2009 in Kaohsiung and at five of seven events at the Grand Prix Circuit 2009 , as well as at the World Cup in Minsk in August. At the world championships of the same year in Mie , Japan , she won gold in all four individual disciplines, as well as the individual all-around. She also won gold with the Russian team in the team all-around competition. Kanajewa was the first rhythmic gymnast who ever succeeded in winning six gold medals at world championships in one year. In 2011 she repeated this feat.

In 2009 Kanajewa was also voted Sportswoman of the Year in Russia. In the following two years she dominated the international gymnastics world and almost consistently won gold medals at the European and World Championships in 2010 and 2011. In the 2012 Summer Olympics, she started as the favorite for the overall victory in the individual and won gold again.

End of sporting career

After she did not start training again after the Olympic Games in London, Yevgenia Kanajewa declared the end of her sporting career in December 2012. In the same month she was appointed vice-president of the Russian Gymnastics Federation.
