Olympic Summer Games 2012 / Rhythmic Gymnastics

At the 2012 Summer Olympics in the British capital, London , two rhythmic gymnastics competitions were held from July 28 to August 14 in the Wembley Arena . As in Beijing in 2008 , there was an all-around competition for women both individually and in groups.

qualification

Qualification criteria

96 athletes will take part in the competitions, including 24 individual starters and twelve groups of six athletes each. The main qualifying competition was the 2011 World Championships , which took place in Montpellier from September 19 to 25, 2011 . In addition, a second qualifying competition was held for the first time in London from January 16 to 18, 2012. Each NOK can use a maximum of two individual starters and one group.

In the individual, the best 15 athletes from the world championships qualified directly. Another five athletes came from the qualifying competition. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) assigned the remaining four starting places to unrepresented continental federations (USA, Egypt, Australia) and the host after the qualification was completed. The six best groups of the World Championships and the four best teams of the qualifying competition qualified for the competitions in the group. The FIG awarded the two remaining starting places to an unrepresented continental association (Canada) and the host. There was controversy over the nomination of the host's team. The British association initially refused a nomination because the team did not reach a minimum number of points set by the association in the qualifying competition. The athletes successfully sued this decision in an arbitration tribunal, so that they finally forced their nomination.
