Qualification criteria

104 athletes took part, eight groups with nine athletes each and 24 duets. A maximum of one group and one duet could qualify per NOK.

One representative from each continental association qualified for the group competition. Africa, Asia and Oceania determined their representatives at the World Championships from July 16 to 31, 2011 in Shanghai , America at the Pan American Games from October 14 to 30, 2011 in Guadalajara . Great Britain was automatically qualified to host and was considered a European qualifier. Finally, three more teams qualified again at a final international qualifying tournament from April 18 to 22, 2012 in London.

24 couples took part in the duet competition. All eight NOKs that were able to qualify a group were also given the right to start the duet. At the final qualification tournament in London the remaining 16 quota places were then awarded.

In addition to the pre-qualified hosts, the best group in their continental association was able to secure participation in both competitions at the World Championships in China, Australia, Egypt and the Pan American Games. At the test and qualification competition in London in April 2012, Russia, Spain and Japan finally qualified for both competitions. All other quota places in the duo competition were also awarded in the test and qualification competition.

The Swiss duo Pamela Fischer and Anja Nyffeler won a quota place in London, but narrowly missed the national qualification criteria. The duo was nominated just before the games.
