At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , two synchronized swimming competitions were held for women, one in a duet and one with the team. A team consisted of nine athletes. A total of eight teams and 24 duets were allowed to take part, although each nation could only send one duet and one team to the start. The winners of the five continental eliminations in 2007 and 2008 qualified for the team competition, with the People's Republic of China as the representative of Asiawas true. In addition, the top three nations of a qualifying tournament in April 2008 in Beijing. If one of the continents did not send a representative, the next-placed teams in this qualifying tournament moved up. The nations qualified for the team competition were also allowed to nominate a duet, whereby both athletes had to belong to the team. The other 16 starting places were also awarded at the qualification tournament, with each continent having an additional duet.
