There were 143 athletes at the start, only about half of whom finished the race. Of the five German participants, four drivers, Gerald Ciolek , Stefan Schumacher , who was previously seen as a gold hope, Jens Voigt and Bert Grabsch , had to give up the race, the fifth German Fabian Wegmann was two and a half minutes behind the winner and was 21. In the Swiss, the only participant Fabian Cancellara could win the bronze medal, the two Austrians Christian Pfannberger and Thomas Rohrgger could not place in the top 20. The race ran for a total of 245.4 kilometers, with seven laps over the Juyongguan Pass after approximately 79 flat kilometers . The first half of the race was dominated by two breakaways, Patricio Almonacid from Chile and Horacio Gallardo from Bolivia, after that some breakaway groups were able to break away for several kilometers before Andy Schleck attacked the race. He was followed by four drivers, Samuel Sánchez , Davide Rebellin , Alexander Kolobnew and Michael Rogers . Kolobnew and Rogers had to let go on the last climb, but were brought back to the top three drivers by Fabian Cancellara, who attacked from the chasing group, so that in the end six drivers sprinted for victory. Sánchez won this sprint ahead of Rebellin and Cancellara.

At the end of April 2009, the National Olympic Committee of Italy (CONI) confirmed that the second rebel had tested positive for the EPO drug CERA during follow-up checks on doping samples . The German Stefan Schumacher also tested positive. On November 17, 2009 Rebellin was officially stripped of her silver medal and Schumacher was also deleted from the list of results.

Double time trial world champion Fabian Cancellara ensured the victory of the favorites and the first Swiss gold medal in these games . After he had already won a bronze medal in the road race, he fulfilled his expectations in the individual time trial and clearly distanced his opponents, especially in the final kilometers. The surprise second of the 39 strong field was the Swede Gustav Erik Larsson , whose time even Cancellara threatened to fail. Thanks to a strong descent, the Swiss man was able to clinch victory in the end. Third place went to the American Levi Leipheimer , who was only a few seconds ahead of his team mate in professional cycling, the Spaniard Alberto Contador . Tour runner-up Cadel Evans finished fifth, with the road race winner, Samuel Sánchez , one place behind him . The two German participants Stefan Schumacher and Bert Grabsch could not fulfill their hopes for a medal and ended up in 13th and 14th place with less than a second gap. There was no Austrian at the start of the 47.3 kilometer time trial.

A few days later there were media reports that the bronze medalist Leipheimer had started with a handlebar that did not comply with the rules. It is unclear how this handlebar could be approved. The consequences have not yet been determined either.

However, through another lap classification, he was overtaken by the 2000 Olympic champion from Spain Joan Llaneras and the British Chris Newton with about 30 laps to go . After 160 laps and 40 kilometers, however, Kluge crossed the finish line first, securing another five points and coming second. Llaneras won the second gold medal of these games for Spain after Samuel Sánchez in road racing, both in cycling.
