Willy Kanis (born July 27, 1984 in Kampen ) is a former Dutch cyclist and bobsledder . She was one of the dominant short-term track cyclists in her country in the 2000s and early 2010s.

Cycling career

Willy Kanis started cycling on the BMX bike because her brother was also active in this sport. The Dutch Cycling Federation convinced her to use her talent on the track too . In 2005 as well as in 2006 she became BMX world champion. “I ride BMX in summer and on the track in winter,” she explains her priorities.

Kanis was multiple Dutch champion in the short-term track disciplines Keirin , Sprint and Single Pursuit and together with Yvonne Hijgenaar reached the podium in several track cycling World Cups in team sprints . At the Track World Championships in 2007 , she and Hijgenaar were runner-up in the team sprint world championships in Palma de Mallorca. Two years later, at the UCI Track World Championships 2009 in Pruszków , Willy Kanis finished second in the sprint and third in the keirin. By 2012 Willy Kanis had won eleven national titles in the short-term disciplines on the track.

Kanis competed at the Olympic Games twice - in 2008 and 2012 . Her best placement was fourth in the sprint at the 2008 Games. At the London Games, she and Hijgenaar set a new Dutch record in the team sprint (33.090 seconds); the duo took fifth place. After the Olympic Games in 2012, she ended her cycling career.

Switch to the bobsleigh and end of career

For the 2012/13 winter season Kanis began training on the two-man bobsleigh , behind the helmsman Esmé Kamphuis . When they started together for the first time, the duo finished fourth in the World Cup race in Whistler . Willy Kanis's goal was to take part in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , but she was unable to qualify. Then she ended her athletic career.

Personal and professional

Willy Kanis is in a relationship with the former German track sprinter and Dutch national coach René Wolff . The couple has had a son since 2014. Kanis works as a physiotherapist for the Dutch national team.
