Truus van der Plaat (born May 11, 1948 in Geldermalsen ) is a former Dutch cyclist .

Athletic career

Truus van der Plaat began her sporting career as a speed skater , only at the age of 21 she turned to cycling. Up until then, cycling had been part of her training program. She was active as a cyclist until 1980. She primarily contested criteria in her home country, of which she won more than 50.

1973, 1975 and 1978 van der Plaat was each third in the Dutch road championship. In 1976 she started at the road world championships in Ostuni , Italy , where she put on the sprint for her compatriot Keetie van Oosten-Hage , so that she won the race and became road world champion for the second time. Two years later - in 1978 - van der Plaat became Dutch champion in sprinting on the track after finishing second five times. The following year, she won the silver medal in the sprint at the World Railroad Championships in the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam . In 1980 she ended her cycling career.

After her triumph at the world championships, the introverted Truus van der Plaat was enthusiastically received in her home town; Since she was still living with her parents, the congregation offered her a rental apartment so that she could move out at home when she was 31. Professionally, she worked as a maternity helper and podiatrist . She later married her neighbor, the couple remained childless.
