At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , a handball tournament was held for both women and men . A total of twelve teams were eligible to play in both tournaments. 15 athletes could be nominated per team; a total of 171 handball players and 172 handball players took part in Beijing.
The preliminary round games took place in the Olympic Sports Center with a seating capacity of 7,000. The finals were played by the best teams in the National Indoor Stadium in front of 19,000 spectators.
qualification
The following qualification criteria applied equally to women and men:
Host China and the world champions ( Germany for the men ) were automatically qualified for the finals. Then there were the continental champions of Africa , America , Asia and Europe . In the event that China was Asian champion, the respective runner-up moved up. Due to the poor performance of oceanic participants in past major events, this continent was not given an automatic launch site.
The remaining six starting places were distributed in spring 2008 at three qualifying tournaments with four teams each. The top two in each tournament qualified for the games. Eligible to participate in these tournaments were the second to seventh placed in the 2007 World Cup, as well as the best of the other teams in the respective continental championships. The remaining twelfth starting place in the qualifying tournament went to the continent that had done best at the World Cup. Oceania only got the chance to qualify if a team from this continent landed in the top twelve at the World Cup (which was not the case for the men), otherwise the quota that had become vacant was also distributed to one of the other continents.

Remarkable
As there were inconsistencies in the Asian qualification, both tournaments were repeated. Surprisingly, at the first tournament for women, Kazakhstan and for men Kuwait prevailed against the highly-favored teams from South Korea.
