Water polo

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in the Chinese capital Beijing , two water polo competitions were held, a men's tournament with twelve teams and a women's tournament with eight teams. The venue was the National Swimming Center .

qualification

Each team was allowed to nominate 13 active players, so that a total of 156 water polo players and 104 women water polo players took part in Beijing. For the men, the five winners of the continental elimination tournaments qualified, with China being the representative of Asia. In addition, there was the winner of the 2007 World League. If he had already been qualified in one of the continental tournaments, the next-placed one moved up. The medalists of the 2007 World Cup in Melbourne also qualified . If they had secured their participation by one of the first mentioned points, the next placed team of the respective continent at the world championships moved up. The remaining three starting places were played out in a qualifying tournament in 2008. If a continent had not been able to set up a team or if one of the qualified teams had refused to start, the starting places that had become free would also have been allocated at this qualifying tournament.

In the women's category, the winners of the five continental eliminations qualified (here, too, China was considered a safe participant in Asia) as well as three other teams who had to prevail in an additional qualifying tournament. If one of the continents had not been able to nominate a team for Beijing, the next-placed teams in the qualifying tournament would have moved up.

Note: The African championships of both sexes were not considered to be Olympic qualifications due to the lack of a sufficient number of participating countries. The additional starting places that became available (one for each gender) were also awarded at the global qualifying tournaments.
