Water polo

At the XX. A water polo tournament took place at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich . The venues were the Olympic swimming pool and the Dante pool .

competition

The first six teams from the 1970 European Championship (Soviet Union, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Italy, Netherlands, Romania), the first four teams from the 1971 Pan-American Games (USA, Cuba, Mexico, Canada) and the 1970 Asian Games were qualified for the Olympic tournament (Japan) and Australia. Since the last Olympic champion, Yugoslavia, and the European Championship Seventh Federal Republic of Germany were automatically eligible to participate, Greece, Spain and Bulgaria moved up.

There were three preliminary groups; the three medal winners from 1968 (Yugoslavia, Soviet Union, Hungary) were seeded and their opponents were drawn by lot. The two best teams in each group advanced into the final round for places 1 to 6, the third and fourth teams played for places 7 to 12 (direct encounters in the preliminary round were included).
