At the XX. At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich , archery competitions were held for the first time in 52 years . The program included a competition for men and women. The competitions were held from September 7th to 10th in the English Garden .

After a large number of competitions were shot at tournaments in the early years of Olympic archery, the Olympic archery tournament in Munich was shot as a so-called double FITA round. In the FITA round, the women shot 36 arrows each at a distance of 70 m, 60 m, 50 m and 30 m away and the men at 90 m, 70 m, 50 m and 30 m distance. In total, each participant had to shoot 288 competition arrows. While the two longer distances, both men and women, shot at target faces with a diameter of 122 cm, a face with a diameter of 80 cm was used for the two shorter distances.
