At the XXIX. During the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , four archery competitions were held. For men and women, there was an individual competition and a team competition with three participants. The target diameter of 1.22 meters and the shooting distance of 70 meters were the same for both sexes.
qualification
The field of participants consisted of 64 men and women. Each National Olympic Committee could send a maximum of six athletes, three of each gender. National Olympic Committees with three athletes of the same sex automatically entered the team competition. There were no fixed starting places, which means that the various National Olympic Committees chose from those athletes who achieved the minimum qualification points. This score was 1200 for men and 1180 for women on a FITA round, 600 and 590 respectively on a 70-meter round. Athletes who wanted to qualify had to meet this norm between July 5, 2007 and July 16, 2008 to reach.
The host country, the People's Republic of China , automatically received three starting places per gender. At the 2007 World Cup in Leipzig , another 80 starting places were awarded. The eight best countries by gender in the team competition received three starting places for the Olympic Games. 16 starting places per gender went to countries with the best placed athletes who did not qualify through the team competition. Additional starting places were awarded at the continental qualifying tournaments. Three places went to Asia, Europe and America, while Africa and Oceania got two places per gender. A maximum of two athletes per country could qualify at these tournaments. A special tournament, the “Final World Qualification Tournament” from June 23 to 29, 2008, was held among countries that had not yet fought for a quota in other competitions. In this phase, a maximum of one athlete per country and gender could qualify. Three further starting places for each gender were awarded by a commission consisting of IOC and FITA members to countries that had registered athletes but had not yet qualified.

After South Korea had won the gold medal in the men's team competition, Park Kyung-mo was also the big favorite in the individual Begin. But the South Koreans' streak of never having won a men's singles title since the sport became Olympic in 1972 continued. Park was defeated by the Ukrainian Viktor Ruban with 112: 113 rings in the final, after he had shown himself to be sovereign in the competition. But one small miss by Parks, an eight, meant the Olympic victory for Ruban. The only German participant Jens Pieper was eliminated in the first round, there were no participants from Austria or Switzerland at the start.

South Korea won the final against Italy with 227: 225 rings. The Chinese archery team won the first bronze medal for the host country after eight gold and three silver medals. There were no German, Austrian or Swiss teams at the start.

Anja Hitzler Germany eliminated in the second round (20th place) Nathalie Dielen Switzerland eliminated in the first round (45th place) Zhang Juanjuan from the host's country has the series of South Korean Olympic victories in this discipline were stopped with a 110-109 victory against reigning Olympic champion Park Sung-hyun . Nevertheless, South Korea was able to win two medals, as Park's teammate Yun Ok-hee won the battle for third place against the North Korean Kwon Un-sil with 109: 106 . The only German participant Anja Hitzler had previously failed in the second round due to the finalist from South Korea.

While there were no German, Swiss or Austrian athletes among the ten teams, the South Korean team was able to set a new world record in the quarter-finals against Italy (231 points). The Asian final between the favored South Korea and hosts China ended with a 224-215 victory for the South Koreans. In the duel for third place, France won 203: 201 rings against Great Britain.
