Zhang Juanjuan ( Chinese : 张娟娟, Zhāng Juānjuān; born January 2, 1981 ) is a Chinese archer . Her greatest achievement was winning the individual competition at the 2008 Olympic Games .

Career

Juanjuan and the team had already become world champion in Beijing in 2001 . She then achieved several successes at major events, including winning the Team World Cup in 2007 and second in the Individual World Cup, after having won the World Cup final in Mérida a year earlier and placed third in the Individual World Cup. She had already taken part in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , where she won the silver medal with the team, but in the individual she clearly missed a medal in tenth place.

After qualifying for the Olympics again in 2008, she started with the team together with Chen Ling and Guo Dan . Thanks to a strong team performance, they made it to the finals, but they failed there because of the strong South Koreans 215: 224, who had won all team competitions since the first edition in 1988. The South Koreans' winning streak lasted since 1984, so that a victory for a non-South Korean woman was unlikely. But through good performances Juanjuan secured the finals with two wins over the South Koreans Joo Hyun-jung and Yun Ok-hee . There the third South Korean, Park Sung-hyun , was the favorite, but Juanjuan won the duel with 110: 109 and thus won China's first archery gold.
