The World Archery Federation (WA) is the world's largest umbrella organization for sports archers and the only association that is admitted to the Olympic Games . The association was founded in 1931 in Lviv , then Poland , now Ukraine , as Fédération Internationale de Tir à l'Arc (FITA) and carried this name until 2011.

At the delegates' meeting in July 2011, the name was changed to World Archery Federation . 88 percent of the delegates present voted for the renaming.

The World Archery Federation is based in Lausanne ( Switzerland ).

tasks

The tasks of the World Archery Federation include the organization of international competitions and the publication and revision of a uniform set of rules for archery. The WA organizes world championships in archery for the target competitions outdoors and indoors, in field archery and in 3D archery.

The WA also tries to influence the development of archery in the world. As a special field she deals with the fight to preserve archery as an Olympic discipline, as well as the expansion of the Olympic program to include archery with the compound bow. The preservation of archery as an Olympic discipline is of particular interest because it has a higher public impact compared to the other public interest (television broadcasts and other reporting). In order to take this fight for attention into account, the World Cup system was introduced in recent years.

At the moment (as of 01/2018) the WA has 162 national associations. Germany is represented in the WA by the German Schützenbund (DSB) . The archery athletes from Austria are represented by the Austrian Archery Association (ÖBSV) . For Switzerland, the Association Suisse de Tir à l'Arc (ASTA / SBV) is a member of the WA.

With the accession to the WA, the member associations recognize the regulations of the WA and undertake to incorporate the regulations into their own sports regulations.
