At the XXIX. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , two modern pentathlon competitions were held, one each for women and men. The venues were various sports facilities in the Olympic Green .

After a retest doping sample was Wiktorija Tereschtschuk on 1 March 2017 by the IOC the bronze medal for doping disallowed . In September 2018, Nastassja Samusevich moved up to third place.

The participation of the American Sheila Taormina , who came in 19th place, is remarkable . She played her fourth Olympic Games, where she had competed in three different sports. In 1996 she started as a swimmer and won the gold medal in the 4 × 200 m relay. In 2000 and 2004 she competed in triathlons.

Qualification criteria

Each National Olympic Committee could nominate a maximum of two men and two women. The 2007 and 2008 World Championships, the individual continental eliminations in 2007 and the World Cup final in 2007 served as qualifying competitions. Three further starting places were distributed by invitation. The remaining starting places, the number of which (between 10 and 16) depended on the extent to which the athletes qualified in the above-mentioned competitions overlapped, were allocated based on the world rankings from June 2008.
