At the XVI. At the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne , two modern pentathlon competitions were held.

For the first time, the points in Olympic competitions were no longer determined by adding up the number of places, but by means of a point evaluation introduced two years earlier. This was based on a guideline value of 1000 points in each individual discipline, but preferred strong runners.
