The Soviet Union took part in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne with a delegation of 272 athletes (233 men and 39 women) in 135 competitions in 17 sports. There were also nine riders who participated in six competitions in the equestrian games.

The Soviet athletes won 37 gold, 29 silver and 32 bronze medals, with which the Soviet Union took first place in the medal table. The most successful athlete was the gymnast Larissa Latynina , who became a four-time Olympic champion and won another silver and bronze medal. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was weightlifter Alexei Medvedev .
