Romualdas Murauskas (born October 2, 1934 in Kaunas , † May 23, 1979 ibid) was a Soviet boxer of Lithuanian origin. He was a bronze medalist at the 1956 Olympic Games in the light heavyweight division.

Career

Romualdas Murauskas grew up in Lithuania and started boxing there as a teenager. He became a member of the Zalgiris Kaunas Sports Club . He was one of the many boxers from the Baltic States who stood in the Soviet national boxing relay in the 1950s.

His first test on the international stage he passed in 1955 in the international match USSR  B against Finland  B in Moscow , where he was through Reino Torkkeli by techn. KO won in the 1st round. In the same year he also won the Soviet qualification for the European Championship in Berlin . He started there in light heavyweight (then up to 81 kg body weight) and won in his first fight over Borislav Andrejev from Bulgaria by techn. KO in the 2nd round. In the quarterfinals, he met defending champion Ulli Nitzschke from Halle , against whom he lost on points. He therefore did not win a medal and landed with three other boxers on the 5th place of this European championship.

At the World Youth Festival in Warsaw in 1955 Murauskas was in the semifinals, in which he was defeated on points against the Romanian Petre Zaharia. Even at the Soviet championships held in late autumn 1955, he did not win a title. He came in third place behind Vitaly Belyayev and Yuri Yegorov.

In 1956 Murauskas then achieved great success at the Soviet championships, which were also qualifying for the Olympic Games in Melbourne . He was with a narrow point victory (3: 2 judges votes) over A. Chotentschik Soviet champion. In Melbourne he won the quarterfinals over the Australian Anthony Madigan on points and was defeated in the semifinals to the later Olympic champion James Boyd from the USA also on points. He was eliminated, but had won an Olympic bronze medal by reaching the semi-finals .

1957 Murauskas was not at the start of the Soviet championship, but was nevertheless nominated by the Soviet association for the European championship in Prague . There he was controversially defeated in the round of 16 (3: 2 judge votes) against the Pole Andrzej Woichiechowski and therefore had to be satisfied with 9th place.

In 1958 he did not appear, but was at the start again in the 1959 Soviet championship. He reached third place in the light heavyweight division. The same result he achieved at the Soviet championship in 1960 in the light heavyweight division, where he was defeated on points in the semifinals against Askold Lasota. Murauskas did not come to international missions after his early retirement at the European Championships in 1957.
