Emil Willer
Emil Willer (born September 1, 1932 in Kiel ) is a former German boxer . He was German light heavyweight champion in 1956 and heavyweight in 1959.
Career
Emil Willer learned the trade of a locksmith as a teenager and began boxing in his hometown of Kiel in 1947 . As an adult, he always weighed a little more than 80 kg and therefore boxed in the light heavyweight division. He later switched to the heavyweight division. In 1951 he was the first Schleswig-Holstein national champion in the light heavyweight division. He won this title several times in the following years. In 1954 Willer moved to Leverkusen for professional reasons and from then on boxed for Bayer Leverkusen .
In 1955 he came to the semi-finals of the German senior light heavyweight championship. In this he met Erich Schöppner from Witten , against whom he lost on points. In the same year Schöppner also became the European amateur champion.
In 1956 Willer succeeded in the final of the German light heavyweight championship a point victory over old master Helmut Pfirrmann from Weinheim . This was the first time he became German champion. In the subsequent elimination between the representatives from the FRG and the GDR for the all-German Olympic team for the Olympic Games in Melbourne , he was very unlucky because he injured himself in his first fight against Hans Roback from Cottbus and had to give up.
Willer won his second German championship title in 1959. In the heavyweight division, he won over Herrmann from Recklinghausen by breaking off in the first round.
From 1953 onwards, Willer represented the Federal Republic of Germany in some country battles. He always cut a fine figure and won most of these fights. In 1953 he defeated z. B. in such an international match the later English professional boxer and challenger of Muhammad Ali Henry Cooper on points. In 1960 he qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Rome . He started there in the light heavyweight division and met in his first fight against the multiple Polish European champion Zbigniew Pietrzykowski , to whom he was defeated with 0: 5 judges' votes on points. He missed the quarter-finals and ended up in 9th place together with all the losers in the round of 16. Pietrzykowski then reached the final, in which he was defeated by Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali). Willer never became a professional boxer.
