Stenocactus multicostatus (English common name Brain Cactus ) is a species of plant in the genus Stenocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species is derived from the Latin words costa for "rib" and multi for "a lot" and means " multi- ribbed".

description

The fresh green, usually single plant body is pressed spherical to somewhat cylindrical and reaches heights of growth of up to 6 centimeters with diameters of up to 10 centimeters. It has no fewer than 120 very thin, sharp-edged, depressed, wavy ribs between which there are narrow furrows. There is usually only one areole on each rib . From the areole arise three white, paper-like, curved central spines that are up to 3 centimeters long and have a square cross-section. The four radial spines are glassy white, erect or slightly curved. The parting is covered by a thin, whitish wool.

The white flowers are 2.5 inches long and have a purple-purple center. The outer petals are elongated pointed, the inner elongated pointed or blunt. The scales on the flower tube are elongated and pointed. The scales of the ovary are broadly ovate, acute to acuminate, very thin, more or less like paper and early sloping.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Stenocactus multicostatus is common in the Mexican states of Coahuila , Chihuahua, and Durango .

First mentioned as Echinocactus multicostatus Hildm. dates from 1890. According to Karl Moritz Schumann , Albert Mathsson is said to have collected the first specimens from Saltillo in Mexico.

Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose assigned the species as Echinofossulocactus multicostatus to the genus Echinofossulocactus newly established by them in 1922 . At the same time they published the first description of two species collected by Francis Ernest Lloyd (1868–1947). Echinofossulocactus lloydii from Zacatecas and Echinofossulocactus zacatecasensis from the north of Zacatecas are now considered synonyms . In 1929 Alwin Berger put the species described by Britton and Rose in Illustrated Handbooks of Succulent Plants: Cacti in the genus Stenocactus .

Another synonym Echinofossulocactus erectocentrus was invalidly published by Curt Backeberg in 1961.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
