Stenocactus is a genus of plants fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The botanical name is derived from the Greek adjective στενός stenós for "narrow" or "narrow" and refers to the many narrow ribs. The type species of the genus is Stenocactus obvallatus .

description

Stenocactus species have spherical to short cylindrical bodies with sharp-edged and thin ribs that are often wavy. Young plants usually have warts and no ribs yet. The areoles are very far apart and have unhooked thorns , which can be clearly differentiated into strong central and weaker radial spines.

The hermaphrodite flowers are short funnel and appear in the apex area. The bracts are white to purple in color. The fruits are light green, spherical and slightly scaled. When ripe, they dry up and tear open lengthways. The seed is glossy black-brown.

Systematics and distribution

The nomenclature of the genus has been confusing and controversial. The species of the genus have long been listed under the generic name Echinofossulocactus . This genus was described by George Lawrence in 1841 . The genus comprised 26 species, but no type species was specified. It later emerged that the 26 species belonged to five different genera. Karl Moritz Schumann established a subgenus Stenocactus for Echinocactus in 1898, apparently ignorant of the work of Lawrence . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose took over Echinofossulocactus in 1922 and typified the genus with Echinofossulocactus coptonogonus . They only selected the species because it was at the top of Lawrence's list of species. In 1980 David Hunt published the results of his taxonomic studies on the genus and proposed Echinocactus helophorus, a new lectotype for the genus Echinofossulocactus . This made Echinofossulocactus a synonym for Echinocactus . The International Organization for Succulent Research (IOS) subsequently accepted the genus Stenocactus and recognized it with its ten species.

Because of the flower and fruit characteristics, a close relationship between Stenocactus and Ferocactus can be assumed.

Synonyms for the genus are Brittonrosea Spegazz. and Efossus Orcutt , but not Echinofossulocactus Lawr. .

The genus currently consists of the ten species listed below. They are all native to the Chihuahua Desert in northern and central Mexico .
